Chapter 8
Luca kept his promise. In less than a week, the media across the city was flooded with the truth.
He held a press conference and publicly apologized to my father. Then he announced that seventy percent of
his fortune would be transferred into a trust fund for Elio.
In front of the cameras, Bianca sat in a wheelchair like a ghost, tears streaming down her face.
“I’m sorry for lying. I ruined him. I ruined Summer…”
My father sat weakly in his wheelchair, his gaze unfocused, yet fixed on the television screen.
His lips trembled. Then he smiled.
Even as tears slid down his face, he kept smiling. That night, he passed away in his sleep.
I dressed him in his best suit and buried him beside my mother.
Luca watched silently from a distance. I didn’t allow him to come closer.
Elio found a matching bone marrow donor, and the surgery was scheduled.
Without telling me, Luca begged the doctors to use his own bone marrow instead.
The night before the operation, he knelt outside the hospital room and pleaded.
“Please… let me do something for him.” His voice broke.
Inside the room, Elio, bald from chemotherapy, looked at him with wide, innocent eyes.
“Are you my dad?”
Tears spilled down Luca’s face.
“Yes,” he said hoarsely. “I’m your dad.”
“Why did you leave us?”
He covered his face, his shoulders shaking. “I’m a terrible person. I made a horrible mistake.”
Elio reached out and patted his head.
“Mom says if you say sorry, you’re a good boy. Are you going to leave us again?”
“Never,” Luca said immediately. “Never again.”
He pulled the boy into his arms and broke down completely.
“I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”
I turned away.

The surgery was a success. The doctor said Elio’s chance of recovery was over ninety percent.
Luca stayed in the hospital for a month. He slept in a chair beside the bed, fed Elio, changed his bandages, and told him stories.
The day Elio was discharged, the sun was bright and warm.
Elio held my hand with one hand and reached for Luca with the other.
