"Obviously, we need a private room!"
"What?" Wendy froze, looking over at Riley.
It turned out Riley was turned sideways, talking to Victor.
Hearing Wendy call her, Riley turned her head and explained, "Oh, I was talking to Victor about Chairman Sutton's check-up."
"Victor was asking if he should request a private room."
"My god, is that even a question? Our biggest VIP is coming in, we're not exactly going to stuff the old man in a shared room."
Victor realized his mistake and muttered defensively, "Well, we're out of beds."
Ever since winter hit, Cardiology had been averaging ten surgeries a day. Forget standard rooms, even the ICU was at max capacity.
Riley gave him some advice. "Go ask Sophie to work some magic for you."
Victor followed her suggestion.
Only after he walked out did Wendy bump Riley's arm and ask, "Chairman Sutton is coming in early for his check-up?"
In previous years, she had always been the one handling his follow-ups and exams.
But this year, she hadn't received any notification.
Riley nodded. "Tomorrow."
Since the office was empty, she lowered her voice and filled Wendy in. "Since you're taking tomorrow off, Dr. Franklin decided to use the opportunity to permanently transfer Chairman Sutton's care over to Victor."
Dr. Franklin had always known about Nelson's relentless pursuit of her, so Wendy understood exactly why he had made the call.
"Yeah, that's for the best." Wendy nodded.
She didn't have time for idle chatter after that.
Even though she was taking time off tomorrow, she still had to finish out her final shift today.
She had four pre-op consultations and two surgeries scheduled for the afternoon.
By the time she stepped out of the operating room, it was six-thirty.
Her coat was still in the office.
Wendy checked her phone messages as she walked back.
Three unread texts. They were all from Chief Lawrence, sent two hours ago regarding a consultation.
While she was in surgery, the test results for one of her patients had come back.
They couldn't do a stent; the patient needed a bypass from Cardiac Surgery.
