Sebastian didn't stay at the cafe much longer.
When he pulled into his driveway and walked through the front door, he found Victoria arranging a fresh bouquet in the living room.
She glanced up as he walked in. "You're back. How did the negotiation go?"
Sebastian collapsed onto the sofa, staring blankly ahead for a moment.
Sensing his grim mood, Victoria frowned. "What's wrong? Did she refuse?"
"She agreed."
He let out a heavy sigh. "But she has a condition."
Victoria's hands paused over the flowers. "What kind of condition?"
He ran a hand through his hair, his voice thick with disgust.
"She wants me to marry her."
The entire room plunged into dead silence.
Sebastian squeezed his eyes shut. "She said she'll get me the patent, but the moment it's secured, we get married."
A beat later, Victoria practically shot out of her chair, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
"Is she completely out of her mind?!"
Sebastian didn't answer.
Victoria paced furiously across the rug. "Sebastian, tell me you didn't actually agree to this madness."
He offered her a tired glance. "I told her I needed time to think."
"Think about what?!" Victoria shrieked.
"You're seriously considering marrying that snake?! After that humiliating fake pregnancy stunt she pulled, our family was dragged through the mud! Do you have any idea what people say about you? They call you a spineless idiot who gets played by cheap women!"
Sebastian rubbed his temples in agony. "Mom, keep your voice down."
Taking a deep, shuddering breath, Victoria marched back over, leaning in close. "Sebastian, listen to me. That girl is rotten to her absolute core."
"The fact that she is blackmailing you into marriage over a business deal proves she is a complete psychopath!"
Sebastian remained silent, staring at the floor.
Victoria wasn't finished. "Do you honestly think she'll be a dutiful wife once she has the ring? I promise you, she won't. If she can use a patent to force you down the aisle today, she will find something else to hold hostage tomorrow. If she joins our family, we will never know a day of peace."
"But without the patent..." Sebastian started, his voice hollow.
