A moment later, Lucian returned.
He offered an explanation unprompted. "It's Julian's birthday today. He put together a gathering tonight and wants me there."
"You should go. Jules is your best friend. It wouldn't look right if you skipped it," Seraphina said, setting her spoon down to look at him.
Lucian hesitated. "I don't like leaving you home alone."
"What is there to worry about? Susan is here, the staff is here. It's not like I'm completely by myself," Seraphina laughed softly. "Besides, it's not like I'm giving birth tomorrow. It won't happen that fast."
Lucian kept his gaze on her, the worry in his eyes refusing to fade.
Her due date was approaching rapidly, and the doctor had warned that labor could start at any time.
He had originally planned to cancel all social engagements, but Julian's birthday was a tough one to skip.
He and Julian had grown up together, thick as thieves.
Back when The Langford Group hit a rough patch, Julian was the very first person to step up and help.
"I'll just drop by for a bit and come right back," Lucian said, taking her hand. "Call me the second you need anything."
"I got it, stop nagging," Seraphina giggled, pulling her hand back to finish her soup.
Lucian watched her, his eyes brimming with absolute devotion.
……
A short while later, Lucian came downstairs dressed in a sharp, dark casual suit.
Seeing him, Seraphina teased, "Looking this handsome, people might think you're going on a date!"
Lucian smiled back. "Would you like to go on a date with me, then?"
"Hurry up and go, don't keep them waiting," Seraphina urged, her cheeks flushing.
Chuckling, Lucian walked to the door, paused, and doubled back to press a lingering kiss to her forehead. "Wait for me."
"I know, I know. Go!" Seraphina pushed him away playfully.
With a final smile, Lucian finally headed out.
