Little Bean grumbled softly. "Being cute is highly technical work, you know."
Lucian took off his jacket, walking over to scoop his son into his arms. "Did you tattle on me to your mom again today?"
Little Bean stared at him with wide, round eyes.
But his inner voice was entirely merciless.
"Don't slander me, Dad. I am providing critical intelligence support."
Seraphina almost burst out laughing.
Lucian caught the amusement in her eyes. "Was he talking bad about me?"
Seraphina coughed lightly. "No, how could he? Your son is just a baby, how could he possibly talk?"
Lucian frowned slightly; even though Seraphina denied it, he couldn't shake the feeling that she and Little Bean shared some secret telepathic connection.
Little Bean immediately twisted the knife in his mind. "At least Dad has some self-awareness now."
Seraphina picked up her water glass to hide her smirking lips.
Dinner went peacefully.
Lucian didn't ask anything else about The Innovation & Strategy Division. He simply picked the bones out of a piece of fish and placed the tender meat into Seraphina's bowl.
Seraphina glanced at him. "I can debone it myself."
"It was no trouble," Lucian replied.
Susan brought the soup out, the corners of her eyes crinkling with a warm smile. "Mr. Langford is so attentive these days."
Little Bean waved his tiny fists.
"Susan is right! Keep it up, Dad. Try to get promoted from a Contract Player to a flawless husband as soon as possible."
Seraphina choked on her soup.
Lucian immediately handed her a napkin. "Take it easy."
Seraphina took the napkin. "I'm fine."
Lucian noticed the red tips of her ears but didn't press the issue.
After dinner, Seraphina headed upstairs to her study.
Lucian sat in the living room holding Little Bean, a pile of brightly colored baby toys spread out in front of them.
He picked up a small rabbit rattle and shook it in front of the baby. "Be good now. Mommy is busy, so Dad will play with you."
Little Bean blinked, his face a portrait of sheer indulgence.
"Dad, I'm not a literal child. I don't need a babysitter."
Lucian stared down at him.
