By the time Seraphina Simmons returned home, the sky had already grown dark.
A dim light glowed in the living room, and the study door was left slightly ajar, spilling a thin sliver of light into the hallway.
She changed her shoes and walked over, gently pushing the door open to see Lucian Langford sitting behind his desk, frowning slightly at the scattered documents in front of him.
The warm light fell across the side of his face, tracing his sharp, handsome jawline.
"You're back?" Lucian glanced up at her, his voice deep and resonant.
"Yeah." Seraphina stood in the doorway. "Have you eaten?"
"I have." Lucian closed the file in his hands. "What about you?"
"I grabbed a bite at a restaurant."
A brief, heavy silence settled between them.
Seraphina walked in and sat across from him. "Lucian, there's something I want to talk to you about."
"Go ahead."
"I need to go to Crestview tomorrow for a summit. It'll be a two-day, one-night trip. It's hosted by my mentor, focusing on new energy materials." Seraphina watched his reaction closely. "I want to attend."
Lucian tapped his fingers lightly on the desk. "How many days?"
"Two."
"Alright." He nodded, not asking any further questions.
Just one word?
Seraphina waited for a few seconds, and seeing that he truly had no intention of saying anything else, a wave of inexplicable disappointment washed over her.
Little Bean stomped his tiny feet inside her belly. "Mommy, Daddy definitely can't bear to let you go!"
Dad, you need to step up your game!
Seraphina rolled her eyes internally. "How would you know he can't bear to let me go?"
"Just ask him! Ask him if he'll miss you!" Little Bean urged.
Seraphina's ears grew hot; there was no way she could ask something like that.
She stood up. "I'll go pack my bags then."
"Wait," Lucian suddenly spoke up.
Seraphina stopped in her tracks, her heart inexplicably skipping a beat.
Lucian pulled a card from his drawer and slid it across the desk. "Don't skimp on expenses while you're traveling."
Seraphina stared at the black gold card, completely stunned.
