Chapter 3 Framing Her
"Abigail! What are you doing?!"
The flame was two inches from the picture frame when her mother, Natalia, burst through the door.
She snatched the lighter away and gripped her daughter's ice-cold hands. "What's gotten into you? Why are you trying to burn your wedding photos?"
Her gaze swept over her daughter's pale face, voice tight with anxiety. "What you said on the phone to your father... about Felix cheating, canceling the wedding... what's this all about?"
"Mom..." Abigail's eyes welled up, her vision instantly blurring. Like a lone boat adrift in a frozen sea, she'd finally found a harbor to shelter in.
James Winchester followed his wife into the room, his brow furrowed as his gaze settled on Abigail.
"Abigail," he said in a stern voice, "canceling a wedding isn't something to take lightly. We've all seen how Felix has treated you these past years. What if this is just a misunderstanding? How will you fix things then?"
"Dad, it's not a misunderstanding." Abigail's throat tightened. "I saw it with my own eyes. Felix and Caroline in the lounge, they were—"
Hurried footsteps cut her off.
Felix had returned, Caroline close behind him, wearing just the right amount of concern on her face. "Abigail, are you okay? We heard you were upset..."
"Perfect timing." Abigail cut her off, voice cold as ice. "Now that everyone's here—I was just about to tell Mom and Dad what you and Felix were doing in that lounge."
"Felix and I? Abigail, what... what do you mean by that?" A flash of confusion crossed Caroline's face at just the right moment.
Then, as if the realization was dawning on her, she opened her mouth in disbelief. "You... you can't possibly be suggesting that Felix and I betrayed you? Abigail, how could you think that of me..."
Tears immediately rolled down her cheeks—a performance so flawless it was almost breathtaking.
"I'm not suggesting," Abigail's voice was firm and steady. She held up her phone, its light casting a pale glow on her face. "I'm stating a fact. Do you need me to play the recording to remind you?"
"Enough, Abigail!" Felix stepped forward immediately, shielding Caroline behind him, his voice full of warning and menace. "How long are you going to keep this up? Waving around some fake recording you got God knows where, trying to drag Caroline and me through the mud? Have you lost your mind?"
Abigail stared coldly at the picture-perfect couple before her, a contemptuous laugh escaping through clenched teeth.
She decided it wasn't worth arguing with someone who twisted facts so blatantly. Turning to James, she said, "Dad, we need to cancel the wedding today. I won't release the recording to the public to protect our family's reputation, but—"
"Abigail." James interrupted sternly, brow furrowed. "Felix already claimed the recording is fake. I believe Felix's judgment, and I know Caroline isn't like that. The guests are all here. Let's not turn the Winchester family into a joke."
"Dad, the recording is real!" Abigail insisted, holding out her phone. "I can send you the original file. You can have it checked, and there's also—"
"Abigail, honey." Natalia took her arm gently. "Listen to me—let's just get through the ceremony first. We can deal with everything else after the wedding, okay? Your father and I will make sure this gets sorted out. But right now, let's not embarrass both families. And... let's give Caroline a chance to save face."
"Mom?"
Abigail turned to stare at Natalia, disbelief flooding her eyes.
That's when it hit her—her parents hadn't come to defend her. They'd come to sweep this under the rug.
