Drake had already heard everything near the elevator. Even so, when Marcus looked at him, he kept his face blank and shook his
head. “No. What is it?”
He thought, Marcus is acting way too eager. There definitely a trap here.
Marcus smiled with suspicious warmth. “We’re collecting bird droppings today. Apparently, the birds spray it out like little cannons.”
Drake was now the overlord of Four Domains. Marcus was certain that someone with that much pride and status would never willingly touch anything related to bird crap.
This was the perfect chance for Marcus to pull the same fake–sweet trick on him.
As long as Drake showed even the slightest disgust, Marcus could immediately turn the whole thing around and accuse him of not being sincere enough toward Emma.
That was the plan.
Drake, however, only raised his brows with perfectly measured surprise. “Bird droppings? What do we need those for?”
Corvin thought Drake truly did not understand, so he’leaned forward eagerly to explain, “Malrik’s skin improved after he got covered in that stuff. Emma wants us to bring some back so Alaric can test it and see whether it can be turned into a skincare product.”
Nobody suggested sending the castle guards, nor did anyone consider it. Emma was the one who asked for this herself. Passing it o an unrelated male would render the whole thing pointless.
“Yeah.” Marcus nodded along, then looked at Drake with a smile that carried far too much expectation. “So, Drake, you’re not hinking of backing out, are you?”
Of course not. If Emma wants it, I’ll bring it back,” Drake answered so naturally that Marcus‘ smile froze slightly.
He looked at Emma with a serious face, as if accepting a royal command rather than gathering bird waste. “Don’t worry, Enmar won’t choose just any sample. I’ll select from the healthiest birds with the best diets. Only the cleanest, freshest, and gust promising droppings will be worth your while.”
Marcus stared at him Wait This is not how this is supposed to go.
Corvin choked violently on his soup What? Cleanest, freshest, and most promising Since when and bad op versch
Edric sat down and joined in with the same unreasonable seriousness “In that case. Fll focus on the strongest bends Stranger bodies usually mean beffer digestion their samples should have better value for research

“What’s wrong?” Emma looked at Silas, concern rising in her eyes because it was rare to see him with such a troubled expression.
“Did something happen?” she pressed.
Silas was the smartest person in the family. For him to look this uneasy, it could not be a smatt matter.
Everyone stopped eating and looked toward him.
Silas replied, “Emma, I genuinely wanted to join them and gather the best samples for you, but the Executive Department just reached out. An urgent matter has arisen, and I must leave right away.”
This part was real; something had indeed come up.
He looked at Emma with genuine regret. “Could you wait for me? Once I deal with this, I can go alone to the cliffs and gather some for you.”
His expression grew even more apologetic. “I may not be able to go with everyone today, but I promise I’ll bring back the freshest batch!”
Emma went quiet for a second. He really does not need to keep emphasizing the word “fresh.”
Since the matter involved the Executive Department, she did not delay him. “No need. Handle your work first. There are enough people here. They can collect it.”
Silas took her hand gently. “Thank you, Emma. I’ll leave first.”
He rose from the table without even finishing breakfast and left.
The dining room was filled with an odd silence after he left. All that was left to wonder was, So, does that count as an escape?
The others suddenly felt as if they had lost a round they had not even known they were playing.
Lucien watched Silas leave and felt the suspicion in his heart settle into certainty.
This is definitely Silas‘ doing. He must have known what dangers lay at those cliffs. Maybe he was sprayed before, remembered how terrible it was, and still sent Malrik there without hesitation.
Now the disaster has spread to all of us.
