Vincent was adjusting his collar in the mirror and didn’t glance toward Vanessa.

Sabrina, however, grew instantly nervous–panicked that Vincent might notice the faint bruises on the girl’s arm. She quickly stepped between them, blocking his line of sight.
Seeing her move so abruptly, Vincent frowned. “Is something wrong?”
Sabrina’s eyes shifted, and an excuse came to her at once. She spoke with rehearsed concern, “Vincent, you’re a grown man, and Vanessa is a young girl. It’s not really appropriate for you to be half–dressed around her.”
At that moment, Vincent’s shirt was still hanging open.
Hearing this, he finished buttoning it and glanced at Sabrina. “You’re right. I wasn’t thinking.”
Sabrina offered a relieved smile. “I’ll take Vanessa back to her room for now. Come over once you’re properly dressed.”
Vincent nodded. “Alright.”
The whole time, Vanessa just stood there quietly, feeling strangely invisible–utterly overlooked.
Watching Vincent and Sabrina interact so easily, her eyes began to sting.
It wasn’t until Sabrina turned and took her hand that a few hurt tears finally escaped.
Sabrina saw her crying but didn’t offer any comfort. She simply led her back to the bedroom.
Once inside, Sabrina picked out Vanessa’s clothes for the day.
Ignoring the child’s teary eyes, she pulled the top over Vanessa’s head.
After she was dressed, Vanessa suddenly grabbed Sabrina’s hand and asked in a small, choked voice, “Sabrina… will you always love me?”
Hearing that, Sabrina reached out and brushed the tears from Vanessa’s cheeks. “Of course I will.”
But Vanessa still seemed uncertain. She threw her arms around Sabrina and held on tightly. “Please don’t leave me. I don’t have a mom… You’re my mom now.”
Sabrina stroked Vanessa’s hair, her voice gentle. “Alright, sweetie. I’ll be your mom.”

At the doorway, Vincent–now fully dressed–had been about to push the door open. But hearing Vanessa’s words, he stopped.
Seeing how deeply Vanessa clung to Sabrina, Vincent couldn’t help but feel that divorcing Scarlett might have been the right choice after all.
It was Saturday, the day of the kindergarten’s annual fall field trip.
The night before, Violet had called Scarlett to say she had a conflict and asked if Scarlett could take Clara on her own.
Scarlett agreed and woke up early to get ready.
By the time she reached the kindergarten, most of the parents and children had already gathered.
The teacher took attendance and noticed only Vanessa and her guardian were missing.
Scarlett stood in the crowd holding Clara’s hand, her gaze fixed on the school entrance, hoping to see Vanessa arrive.
Ever since she was little, Scarlett had taught Vanessa not to be late.
But now, nearly ten minutes had passed, and they were still waiting.
As Vanessa and her parent failed to appear, a few parents began to voice their impatience.
“Can we just get started? Do we really have to wait for one family?”
“It’s the weekend—some of us have plans. I made time for this trip, but I didn’t sign up to stand around.”
“Seriously, teachers–time is money. Let’s move it along.”
In moments, the assembly area buzzed with murmurs of complaint.
Scarlett didn’t join in. She just kept watching the gate.
Then Clara suddenly tugged her hand. “Auntie.”
Scarlett bent down. “What is it, honey?”
Clara whispered, “Damian has been looking at you.”
Scarlett followed Clara’s gaze.
