She'd gotten up early that morning because she'd promised Vanessa the night before that she'd take her to preschool.
Even though they lived close, with the snow coming down outside, Sabrina had brought a small clear umbrella with her.
That day, she was wearing a tan coat over a simple black long-sleeve dress, paired with boots that came up to her mid-calf. Because of the cold, she'd wrapped a matching scarf around her neck.
She'd spent a good amount of time getting ready before leaving the house, and it showed—she looked fresh, polished, put together.
When she pushed open the door to the penthouse lobby, the snow on her umbrella started melting from the indoor heat. She gave it a quick shake outside before bringing it in and leaving it by the entrance.
She was a little surprised to see Vincent sitting in the living room.
After changing into the house slippers by the door, she walked over and said softly, "Vincent?"
Vincent looked up at her approaching.
He gave a small nod. "Hey."
Noticing the tiredness etched into his face, she asked carefully, "You okay? Did you stay up late last night? Or... did you not sleep at all?"
Vincent looked away. He didn't really respond to her concern, just said flatly, "I'm fine."
Sabrina stiffened slightly but didn't push. "Okay."
After a moment of quiet, she added, "I'll go upstairs and get Vanessa."
Vincent replied without looking up. "Sure."
As Sabrina headed up the stairs, she couldn't help the small pang of disappointment that settled in her chest.
She'd put so much effort into how she looked today. And still, Vincent hadn't noticed.
The thing was, she was pretty—really pretty. Great figure, tall, slim, with curves in all the right places. The kind of body most women would kill for.
But even that didn't seem to register with him.
And yet, back in the day, he'd introduced her to all his friends, brought her to parties. Everyone in their circle just assumed she was his girl.
But nothing had ever really happened between them.
When she got upstairs, Vanessa was still asleep. Sabrina shook her awake anyway.
Vanessa sat up, groaning. "Sabrina, why are you here so early? It's not even light out."
Sabrina's expression flickered. She had about a hundred reasons to be annoyed, but she swallowed them down.
She smiled at Vanessa. "It might not be light out yet, but it's almost 7:30. Any later and you'll be late for school."
Vanessa groaned louder. "You sound just like my mommy! Can't I just skip? Nobody there even likes me."
Under her breath, Sabrina muttered, "Yeah, wonder why."
