But the smile she wore around Damian seemed genuinely happy.
Thinking about all that, Vincent's mood sank.
A restless feeling started to creep over him. He closed his tablet and said to Abbott, "Head back without me. I need to take a walk."
Abbott tried to stop him, but before he could get a word out, Vincent had already stepped out of the car.
Once outside, Vincent's legs seemed to move on their own, carrying him straight toward Scarlett and Damian.
Neither of them noticed him approaching.
The baked sweet potato had gone cold, so Damian decided to have the vendor warm it up again.
The vendor wasn't far, just a short walk away. He figured he'd be back in under a minute.
The moment Damian left, Vincent walked up to Scarlett.
When she turned and saw his face, she jumped. "Vincent... what are you doing here?"
Vincent took in her flustered expression and replied coldly, "Feeling guilty about something?"
Scarlett looked up at him. "Guilty about what? You did whatever you wanted. Why shouldn't I do the same?"
Vincent's face was stern, not a trace of warmth in it. "Come back with me."
He didn't argue—just stated it like an order.
Scarlett let out a humorless laugh. "Back? Back where?"
"Ravenshade Villa," Vincent said.
That only made her laugh again. "Ravenshade Villa was never my home. When I lived there, I was treated worse than the help. Vincent, what makes you think I'd ever call that place home?"
Ignoring her anger, Vincent said flatly, "If you agree to come back, we can start over."
Scarlett felt like she was going crazy. "Why would I go back with you? I stopped caring about your idea of 'starting over' a long time ago."
When Vincent saw she wouldn't budge, he reached for the wheelchair.
But just then, Damian returned.
Seeing Vincent trying to wheel her away, Damian closed the distance in a few quick strides. He gripped the handles firmly and glared at Vincent. "Did you really have to bother my wife the second I stepped away?"
Damian called her "my wife" without hesitation.
