“Is that money for me? Perfect timing—your aunt’s family just ran into trouble, and both her sons need cash. Just hand it over to me,” Gina said, her steps suddenly brisker at the sight of the envelope.
She strode up to the nurse and reached out to snatch the money, her frail demeanor vanishing in an instant.
“That’s my paycheck. If you take it, you can take care of yourself from now on,” Yvonne interjected, her voice tight with anger.
“Fine. The family’s short on money—every penny counts. She goes out to work for the family and ends up in the hospital, but you? You’re never around. Are you even my daughter?” Gina’s words dripped with resentment, though she tried to keep her tone soft.
She tore the envelope from Yvonne’s hands and counted the bills, her face pinched with dissatisfaction.
“This is all you managed to save? Tracy had to cover my surgery, and she even got me this nice room. Raising you was a waste—you’ve never been any help,” Gina muttered, her complaints endless.
Yvonne stood rooted to the spot, taking a long, steadying breath to keep her emotions in check.
She’d paid the surgery bill herself, and Marico had arranged for the private room. Yet, in her mother’s eyes, it was all thanks to Tracy.
If she hadn’t shown up to sign the consent forms, who knows where Gina would be now?
Turning to the nurse, Yvonne gritted her teeth. “You’re off duty. Get some rest—you don’t need to look after her anymore.”
She didn’t bother to say another word. Without a backward glance, she walked out.
Gina called after her, “Your brothers are still in the hospital, and your sister too! No matter how heartless you are, you can’t just abandon your family!”
Yvonne only walked faster.
Brothers and sister? She almost laughed. They’d nearly destroyed her life, dragged her into ruin. She wished those parasites would just disappear for good.
