Chapter 136*

“Because they don’t think they II get caught,” Riley said. “And honestly? They probably won’t be. Unless we can prove the water was tampered
with, it’s just speculation.
I finished my chicken. “It doesn’t matter.”
Everyone looked at me
“What do you mean it doesn’t matter?” Jake asked.
“I mean exactly that. Even if someone did tamper with the water, there’s no proof. Saying something won’t help. It’ll just make me look like I’m
making excuses.”
Riley started to argue. “But if someone’s actively sabotaging youàe”
Then I’ll be more careful tomorrow.” I stood up. “Thanks for the concern, But I can handle this.”
I picked up my tray. Walked away,
At eight PM, everyone gathered in the main hall. A large bulletin board had been set up near the entrance.
Felix stood next to it. “Physical fitness rankings for the top twenty candidates are posted here. If you’re not in the top fifty overall, you need to seriously reconsider whether you’re cut out for this program.”
He stepped aside.
Everyone rushed forward. Trying to see the board.
I waited until the crowd thinned. Then walked up.
Found my name.
1.Sterling, Aria – 76/100
I scanned up the list.
1.Rodriguez, Saffron – 94/100
She’d scored eighteen points higher than me.
I turned away from the board. Walked back to the barracks.
Behind me, I heard voices.
“See? The kid can’t handle real pressure. By tomorrow she’ll be gone.”
That was Saffron. Talking to her friends.

I didn’t look back. Just kept walking.
Saffron thought she was clever. Thought a little coordination disruption would be enough to break me.
She had no idea who she was dealing with.
If they wanted to play games, fine. I’d play along.
But they should know something first. I’d been playing games like this since before most of them could walk.
I woke up at five-thirty AM. The barracks were still dark. Everyone else was asleep.
I got up quietly. Changed into clean workout clothes. Left the building.
The compound was silent. Just the sound of my footsteps on gravel.
I started running. Around the perimeter fence. Slow and steady. Clearing my head.
Yesterday had been frustrating. But complaining wouldn’t help. Accepting help from Riley’s team wouldn’t help either.
After thirty minutes, I headed back. Took a shower. Got ready for the day.
By seven AM, everyone was gathering in the mess hall for breakfast.
I got in line. Grabbed a tray. Scrambled eggs. Toast. Orange juice.
Found an empty table. Sat down.
Riley’s group appeared a few minutes later. They walked over.
“Morning, Riley said. “Mind if we join you?”
“Go ahead.”
They all sat down. Started eating.
Chen pulled out his tablet while he ate. He was scrolling through something.
“What are you looking at?” Sofia asked.
“Equipment assignments for today’s marksmanship test.” Chen’s eyes moved across the screen. “They posted them at six AM.”
‘And?” Jake leaned over to look.
“Aria, what’s your weapon number?”
I pulled out the paper they’d given us yesterday. Checked the assignment.
“Forty-seven.

Chen stopped scrolling. His expression changed.
“That’s not good.”
“Why not?” Riley asked.
Chen turned his tablet around. Showed us a maintenance log.

“Weapon number forty-seven was flagged for maintenance issues three days ago. Sight alignment problem. It shouldn’t be in the active
equipment pool.”
Antonio frowned. “How did it end up assigned to a candidate then?”
“Good question.” Chen scrolled down. “According to this, the flag was cleared yesterday morning. No maintenance notes. No repair logs. Just
cleared.”
Sofia set down her fork. “That’s suspicious.”
“Yeah.” Chen looked at me. “Your shots are going to be off by about two inches to the right at twenty-five yards. Maybe more at longer
distances.”
“Can I get it swapped?” I asked.
“There’s a swap window. Thirty minutes every morning before the assessments lock.” Chen checked his watch. “Seven to seven-thirty. We need
to go now.”
1
I stood up. “Let’s go.”
Chen grabbed his tablet. We both headed toward the armory.
The armory was in building five. A squat concrete structure with heavy security doors.
We got there at seven forty-eight.
Chen pushed open the door. “We need to swap out a weapon assignment.”
The man behind the counter looked up. He was maybe fifty. Gray hair. Stern expression. His name tag said “Morrison.”
“Equipment assignments are locked.”
“What?” Chen checked his watch again. “It’s only seven forty-eight.”
“Swap window closed at seven forty-five.” Morrison didn’t even look at us anymore. Just went back to his paperwork.
“But the paper said seven-thirty! Chen’s voice got louder.
1
“Paper’s wrong. Window is seven to seven forty-five. Forty-five minutes total.”
Chen put his tablet on the counter. “Look. This weapon has documented maintenance issues. It shouldn’t have been assigned to anyone.”

Morrison glanced at the screen. “Internal issue. I’ll note it for the next selection.”
“That doesn’t help us today!”
“Not my problem. Morrison pushed the tablet back toward Chen. “She uses assigned equipment. No exceptions.”
“The weapon is faulty!”

“Welcome to field operations.” Morrison’s voice was flat. Bored. “Sometimes your gear fails. Sometimes you work with what you have. That’s what we’re testing.”
He looked at me. “You can file a formal complaint after the assessment. But you’re shooting with number forty-seven today. Take it or forfeit the category.”
Chen’s hands clenched. “This is ridiculous.”
“Those are the rules. Morrison turned away. “Next.”
1
We walked out of the armory.
Chen was breathing hard. Angry. “That window is deliberately short. And think someone knew you’d have a faulty weapon and made sure you couldn’t swap it.”
I didn’t respond. Just walked back toward the range area.
“Aria, your scores are going to suffer. This isn’t fair.”
“I know.”
“So what are you going to do?”
“Adjust. Compensate.” I stopped walking. Looked at him. “Complaining won’t fix the sight. I work with what I have.”
Chen stared at me for a moment. Then nodded slowly. “Okay. Good luck.”
He headed back to the mess hall.
I continued to the range.
The shooting range was set up behind building six. Multiple firing lanes. Targets at various distances. A covered area where candidates waited their turn.
I found the equipment station. Showed my assignment paper.
The staff member handed me weapon number forty-seven. ‘Sign here.”
I signed. Took the weapon.
Walked to one of the practice areas. They gave us fifteen minutes to familiarize ourselves with our assigned weapons before testing began.

Chapter 136 *
I checked the pistol. Standard nine-millimeter. Military issue.
Aimed at a practice target twenty-five yards away. Dry fired once.
The sight picture felt wrong. I aimed dead center but knew it would hit right.
I made a mental note. Two inches right at twenty-five yards. Need to aim eft to compensate.
“Tough luck with that weapon.”
I turned my head slightly.
Saffron stood about ten feet away. She was holding her assigned pistol. Checking it with exaggerated care.
“I heard someone tried to get you a swap.” Her voice was light. Casual. “That’s unfortunate. But rules are rules, right?”
I didn’t respond.

“I mean, imagine if everyone could just swap weapons whenever they wanted. That would be chaos.” Saffron smiled. “The military doesn’t work that way. Neither does this program.”
She walked closer. Lowered her voice slightly.
“You know what I find interesting though? That weapon was flagged for maintenance. Then suddenly cleared yesterday morning. Right before equipment assignments were finalized.”
Her smile got wider. “Crazy coincidence, huh?”
I met her eyes. “Are you done?”
“Oh, I’m just getting started.” Saffron’s expression hardened. “But you? You’re almost done. One more bad performance and you’re out. Everyone
knows it.”
She walked away. Headed to her firing lane.
Vanessa was waiting there. The blonde woman from yesterday. They talked quietly. Both glanced at me once. Then laughed.
I turned back to my weapon. Continued familiarizing myself with it.
At eight AM, Felix’s voice came over the loudspeaker.
“All candidates report to firing lanes. Pistol assessment begins in five minutes.”
Everyone moved to their assigned lanes. I was in lane twelve.
The targets were set at twenty-five yards. Standard paper targets. Circular bullseye design.
