And I said a lot of stupid shit in school. Aria shrugged. “People change. Prople grow up. People realize they were being idiots.”

“So you’re saying the letter was fake? I couldn’t keep the edge out of my bice. “That whole thing about how I make you feel warm and how

you think I’m kind and smart–that was all bullshit?”

“No. She met my eyes again. It was real. At the time.”

“Yeah. At the time I was a different person. A dumber person. A person who thought guys like you were worth the effort.”

The contempt in her voice was so casual it almost didn’t register at first.

I don’t get-

“She’s not interested, Arthur said quietly. “Dude, I think she’s actually not interested anymore.”

“Bullshit.”

No fucking way.

She didn’t get to do this. Didn’t get to just… decide I wasn’t good enough

I started walking,

“Kai? Bella called after me. “Where are you going?”

I didn’t answer.

My legs ate up the distance. They were almost to the Chinese place.

I reached out. Went to tap her shoulder. Just to make her turn around. Make her look at me. Make her explain what the hell was happening.

My hand was inches from her shoulder when she moved.

One second she was walking away from me.

The next she was behind me.

I didn’t even see her turn. It was like watching a video skip frames, A blur of motion that my brain couldn’t process.

Then pain exploded through my arm.

Fuck! The word ripped out of me.

She had my wrist twisted at an angle that made my shoulder scream. Herther hand was at my throat.

Not choking me

Just resting there

Light enough that could breathe.

Heavy enough that I knew–knew–she could crush my windpipe before I could blink.

My whole body went rigid.

Every instinct 1 had–every hour of training, every sparring match, every fight I’d ever been in–was screaming at me to react.

To throw her off. To reverse the hold. To show her who the real Alpha was
