People started moving toward the trucks. Slow Dragging their feet

I climbed into the second track. Found a seat near the window

Other candidates filled in around me. Most were quiet. Some tried to male conversation

Amone know what the format is today? someone asked.

Probably one-on-one matches, another person said. That’s how the Pit usually works

How do you know?

My cousin fought there once. Said it was the most intense experience of his life.”

Did he wint

Yeah. But he never went back

The truck engine started. We began moving.

The ride was long. Bumpy. We left the city behind Drove through suburbs. Then into desert.

The landscape changed. Buildings became sparse. Then disappeared entirely. Just send and rocks and occasional cacti.

I watched out the window. Didn’t participate in the nervous chatter around me.

Someone behind me was praying quietly. I could hear the whispered words

Someone else was doing breathing exercises. In for four counts. Hold for far. Out for four

Chen was reading something on his tablet. His face was pale.

Riley sat across from me. Her expression was focused. Determined.

Ninety minutes later, the trucks slowed down. Turned off the main road onto a dirt path.

Ahead, I could see a structure. Low to the ground. Concrete and steel. It looked like an industrial warehouse. But I knew better.

This was the Pit.

The trucks stopped. The engines cut off.

Felix’s voice came through a speaker. Everyone out. Form up at the entrance.”

Doors opened. People climbed down

I stepped onto the dirt. Looked at the building.

It hadn’t changed. Same reinforced concrete walls. Same steel doors. Same feeling of controlled violence hanging in the air.

Around me, candidates were staring at the facility. Some looked nervous. Others tried to act tough.

“This is it?” someone said. “Looks like an abandoned factory.”

“That’s the point, someone else responded. “The Pit doesn’t advertise.”

Felix walked to the front of our group. “Listen up. You have one hour before the assessment begins. Use this time to familiarize yourselves with the facility. Explore. Prepare mentally.”

He paused. Looked at all of us.

The layout is straightforward. Main entrance leads to a central viewing area. Multiple fighting cages branch off from there. Medical station is

on the east side. Registration desk is on the west.”

Someone raised their hand. “Sir, how many cages are there?”

“Thirteen.”

That number sent whispers through the group. Felix continued. “You’re free to watch any ongoing fights. Talk to other fighters. Get a feel for

the environment. But stay together. Don’t wander into restricted areas.”

“What counts as restricted?” someone asked.

“You’ll know it when you see it. There are signs. And guards.”

He checked his watch again. “You have exactly sixty minutes. Be back here at 8:00 AM sharp for your assignments. Anyone who’s late forfeits

their candidacy. Understood?”

“Yes sir!” we all responded.

“Dismissed.

The group broke apart immediately. Some people headed straight for the entrance. Others stood around talking. A few walked to the side to do

last-minute warm-ups.

I started walking toward the entrance. Slow. Observing.

“Hey! Aria! Wait up!”

I turned. Two girls were jogging toward me. Both looked young. Maybe my age or slightly older.

They stopped in front of me. One was tall with dark skin and braided hair The other was shorter with red hair pulled into a messy bun.

The tall one spoke first. “Hey, I’m Maya. This is Jen.”

Jen waved. “We’ve seen you around. You’re Sterling, right?”

“Yeah.”

Maya looked a little nervous. “Listen, we know you probably want to scout alone, but would you mind if we tagged along? We’re kind of new to all this. You seem like you know what you’re doing.”

Jen nodded quickly. “Plus safety in numbers, right? Some of these people look seriously intense.”

I studied them both. Maya moved with confidence despite her nervousness Her posture was good. Balanced. Like someone with martial arts

training.

Something about the way she held herself reminded me of someone. A gamma warrior from my old pack. Same stance. Same awareness.

It was strange. Familiar in a way I couldn’t explain.

“Okay,” I said.

Maya’s face lit up. “Really? Thanks! We promise we won’t get in your way or anything.”

“Just stick close,” I said. “Don’t touch anything unless I say it’s okay.”

“Got it,” Jen said.

We walked toward the entrance together. The steel doors were open. Propped wide.

Inside, the temperature dropped. The concrete walls kept everything cool. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead.

The main corridor was wide. Industrial. Pipes ran along the ceiling. The floor was polished concrete.

Sounds echoed from deeper in the facility. Crowd noise. Metal clanging. Shouts.

Maya looked around. “This place is huge.”

“It goes underground,” I said. “Multiple levels.”

“How do you know that?” Jen asked.

I didn’t answer. Just kept walking.

We passed a group of fighters warming up in a side room. All of them looked professional. Scarred. Dangerous.

One of them looked up as we passed. His eyes tracked me for a moment. Then he looked away.

Jen whispered. “Did you see that guy’s face? He’s missing an ear.”

“Probably lost it in a fight,” Maya whispered back.

We continued down the corridor. Turned left at an intersection.

The noise was getting louder. We were getting close to the main viewing area.

Then I heard Felix’s voice behind us. Loud. Authoritative.

“Everyone! Before you scatter, I need to make something absolutely clear!”

We all stopped. Turned around.

Felix was standing in the main corridor. His expression was serious. More serious than I’d ever seen it.

“There are thirteen cages in this facility. You are free to observe fights in welve of them. But Cage 13 is off-limits. I mean it. Stay away from

Cage 13.

Someone called out. “Why? What’s special about Cage 13?”

Felix’s jaw tightened. “Cage 13 is designated for death matches.”

The entire group went silent.

“Death matches?” someone repeated. “Like actual death?”

“Yes. Actual death.”

A woman near the front spoke up. Her voice was shaking. “You’re saying people die in there? Legally?”

“Yes. Both fighters sign a liability waiver before entering. The waiver acknowledges that death is a possible outcome. Once you’re in that cage,
