Angelina’s POV
The truck pulled into the compound at 9:47 PM. The engine cut off and everyone started climbing out.
I grabbed my gear bag and jumped down from the truck.
“Everyone gather at the assembly point! Felix’s voice cut through the noise. “Final announcements in ten minutes!”
The candidates started moving toward the main building. Slow. Exhausted. Some were limping. Others looked like they could barely stay awake.
I walked with the crowd. Maya and Jen stayed close to me. The assembly point was the same concrete area where we’d gathered that morning.
Felix stood at the front with his clipboard. Behind him was a large screen. Digital. Probably for displaying results.
“Line up by candidate number!” Felix shouted. “Same formation as this morning!”
Everyone shuffled into position. I found my spot. Number forty-seven.
Maya was somewhere to my left. Jen was behind me. Riley and Chen were cross the
Felix checked his watch. Waited until everyone was quiet.
“Alright. Listen up. Today was the final evaluation of the Special Operations Selection You all completed various assessments over the
three days.”
He paused. Looked at all of us.
“The scores have been calculated. Rankings have been determined. Out of wo hundred candidates who started this program, only thirty will be
selected for the Special Operations unit.”
Whispers started spreading through the formation. Felix raised his hand for silence.
“I’m going to display the top fifteen names. If your name appears, congratulations. You’ve made it. If your name doesn’t appear, thank you for
your service and effort. You’re dismissed to collect your belongings and arrange transport home.”
The screen behind him lit up. A list appeared.

I glanced over at Maya. She was staring at the screen with her mouth open. Then she looked at me. Smiled. Gave a thumbs up.
The screen changed. Showed a red line separating the selected candidates from everyone else.
The list continued.
Felix spoke again. “Candidates one through thirty, remain here. Everyone else, you’re dismissed. Thank you for your participation.”
The formation broke apart. Most people started walking away immediately Some looked devastated. Others looked relieved.
The thirty of us who’d been selected stayed in formation. Waiting.

Felix walked along the line. Looking at each of us.
“You thirty represent the best of the best. You’ve proven yourselves capable of handling extreme situations. Making difficult decisions under pressure, Operating at the highest levels of physical and mental performance.”
He stopped in front of me.
“Sterling. Your performance today was unprecedented. One hundred points from the Cage 13 victory alone. Combined with your scores in other evaluations, you’ve achieved the highest total score in the history of this program.”
I didn’t respond. Just stood at attention.
Felix continued down the line. “The rest of you also performed exceptionally well. You should be proud.”
He reached the end. Turned back to face all of us.
“Training begins in two weeks. You’ll receive your assignments and reporting instructions via secure email within the next forty-eight hours.
Until then, you’re on leave. Go home. Rest. See your families.”
He paused.
“One exception. Sterling, you’re dismissed effective immediately. Your academic schedule requires you to return to school by Tuesday morning.
A transport vehicle will take you back tonight.”
I nodded. “Yes sir.”
“Everyone else, you’ll depart tomorrow afternoon. Standard military transport. Any questions?”
Nobody spoke.
“Good. Dismissed.”

Chapter 170*
The formation broke. People started talking. Congratulating each other.
The north gate was a smaller entrance. Used for individual transports rather than group movements.
A black SUV was parked there. Engine running. Headlights on.
I walked toward it. Expected to see a standard military driver
But when I got closer, I saw who was behind the wheel.
Derek.
He was leaning against the driver’s side door. Arms crossed. Waiting.
When he saw me approaching, he straightened up. Smiled slightly.
“Heard you got first place. Congratulations.”
Thanks.
He walked around to the passenger side. Opened the door for me.
“Let me take that.” He reached for my gear bag.
I handed it to him without hesitation. He put it in the backseat. Then gestured to the open door.
I climbed in. He closed the door. Walked back around to the driver’s side.
Derek got in. Put on his seatbelt. “You hungry? We can stop somewhere if you want.”
“I’m okay.”

“Alright. Let’s get you home then.”
He put the vehicle in drive. We pulled away from the compound.
The road was dark. Empty. Just our headlights cutting through the night.
Derek drove in silence for a few minutes. Then he spoke.
*Felix called me earlier. Told me what happened at the Pit. Said you substituted into a death match. Killed a man named Theodore in thirty
seconds.
I didn’t respond. Just looked out the window.
“He also said you saved another fighter’s life. Someone named Marquis.”
“Marquis would have died if I hadn’t stepped in.”
“That’s what Felix said.” Derek’s hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel. “He also said you were calm the entire time. Before the fight.

During the fight. After the fight. Like killing someone was just another task to complete.”
I turned to look at him. “Does that bother you?”
“Should it?”
Some people would say yes.”
Derek was quiet for a moment. Then he said, “You remind me of someone. Your personality. The way you handle yourself.”
“Who?”

“My wife. Aurora. His voice got softer. “She had the same kind of strength The same determination. Once she decided on something, nobody
could change her mind. Not me. Not her family. Nobody.”
I processed that. My biological mother. The woman I’d never met.
We drove for another few minutes. The silence wasn’t uncomfortable. Just houghtful.
Then I did something I rarely did. I stopped walking. Well, stopped riding spoke.
“Tell me about her.”
Derek glanced at me. Surprised. “Aurora?”
Yeah.
He seemed to think about where to start. “She was beautiful. That’s the first thing everyone noticed. But that wasn’t what made her special.”
He paused. Organized his thoughts.
“Aurora went to Stardust Academy. It’s an elite performing arts school. Only the most talented students get accepted. They train actors, singers, performers. Most of the biggest stars in the entertainment industry went here.”
She wanted to be an actress?”
“She was going to be a famous actress. That was her dream since childhood. And she had everything it took. The talent. The looks. The drive.”
Derek’s expression became distant. Like he was seeing something from the past.
“Several of her classmates from Stardust Academy became huge stars. A- celebrities. Award winners. The kind of people you see on magazine
covers.”
“But she didn’t.”
“No. Because she met me. His voice turned bitter. I was working security at one of her performances. She was playing the lead role. Incredible
performance. After the show, we started talking. One thing led to another
He stopped talking. His jaw was tight.
