"I’m out of money." Chloe Reed’s tone was flat as her fingers toyed with the massive diamond ring. Its setting was a cascade of rose petals, beautiful and exquisite.
She had fallen in love with it at first sight.
Later, he proposed to her with it.
She had been so moved by his thoughtfulness that she’d burst into tears.
This ring had borne witness to their love.
But now, their love was gone. The marriage had turned ugly, and her life was getting progressively worse.
’After thinking it over and over, she realized that perhaps the only way to start anew was to sever all ties with the past.’
Therefore, she had to cut off everything related to the past—everything about them.
Iris Yates fell silent for a moment, seeming to ponder her words.
After a moment, she finally said through gritted teeth, "That son of a bitch. Did he really cut you off? He was never like this before!"
Chloe Reed’s lips curved into a self-mocking smile. "I know. How did things ever get like this?"
Iris Yates’s heart ached for her. "Cherie, I’ll give you money. I can transfer you some. I know how much you love that ring. You should keep it."
"I don’t want it anymore," Chloe Reed said, her voice light and detached. "I don’t want anything that has to do with him."
After a long pause, Iris Yates finally agreed, though it was difficult. "Okay."
After she listed the ring for sale, many people inquired about it. But the ring, which had been valued at 300 million four years ago, couldn’t even fetch half that amount now.
Chloe Reed, however, wanted to sell it for a higher price so she would have a bit more financial breathing room.
Iris Yates told her, "Why don’t you get back to work? You haven’t taken a single job since you got married. The industry is desperate for top-tier professional voice actors right now."
Something stirred in Chloe Reed’s heart.
"It’s been so many years... Can I really still do it?"
"Cherie, have some confidence! Stop questioning yourself! Have you forgotten the records you set a few years ago? The radio drama you narrated surpassed a hundred million listens, and sales for the commercials you voiced skyrocketed. For years, your fans have been starving, just waiting for you to make a comeback!"
"Okay."
It seemed Iris Yates’s enthusiasm was contagious, and the corners of Chloe Reed’s mouth lifted into a smile.
"Chloe."
Just then, a low, hoarse voice called out.
Chloe Reed turned to see Walker Grant standing in the bedroom doorway. He was leaning on the frame for support, his handsome face pale as he watched her. "Isn’t it time to change my dressing? My back really hurts."
Chloe Reed watched him with a cool, distant gaze for a moment before replying, "I’ll have the doctor take a look at you."
Walker Grant’s thin lips tightened, and the look in his eyes grew darker.
Chloe Reed called their family doctor but was told he was out of town on a house call and wouldn’t be back for a while.
The family doctor said, "Mrs. Grant, changing the dressing is very simple. Just follow the instructions I gave you earlier. I have a patient with me now, so I have to go."
