Kane trembled as he collapsed beside the coffin, desperately searching for any small difference between the figure inside and Aria. His gaze swept over every inch, but he saw only the woman he had spent the last five years with, the woman he loved deeply.
How could this be? Just yesterday, they had spoken, and she had shown no signs of despair or any intention to end her life.
No, it couldn’t be true. His little wolf was just upset that he hadn’t been there for her the past few days. She was only angry, throwing a tantrum
-nothing more.
Kane stretched out his hand to touch her face, trying to convince himself that Aria was merely asleep. “Little wolf, your skin is so cold. Let me warm you, okay? Today is our mate ceremony. Are you really going to leave me here all alone?” His voice trembled as he finished speaking.
A staff member stepped forward, gently supporting him. “Alpha Kane, please accept our condolences. Aria has passed away.”
Those words ignited a blazing fury within Kane. He shoved the staff member away with all his strength, his bloodshot eyes burning with rage as
he roared, “No! Aria isn’t dead–she’s just asleep!”
The staff member hesitated, then silently handed him a phone. “Alpha Kane, Aria took her own life yesterday at 6 PM. When we arrived, she
had left a message for you on her phone.”
Six PM?! The mention of the time sent a jolt through Kane’s chest. If he remembered correctly, he had ended their call at exactly 6 PM yesterday–right before he spent the rest of the evening with Julia.
Kane’s face went even paler. With trembling hands, he took the phone and opened it. What greeted him was a note, a few lines of text that pierced his heart.
“Kane, you were the one who pulled me out of my desolate world when I was 22. You gave me a love like no other. These past five years with you have been the happiest of my life, but I never expected happiness to be so fleeting. In just five years, the man who once held me and promised to love me forever has disappeared. Half a month ago, I risked my life to undergo the awakening, just so I could fully sense your emotions for our mate ceremony. But I never expected that the first emotion I would sense after my awakening would be your desire intertwined with your beta. In these past two weeks, I’ve been broken, despairing, and finally, resigned. I’ve come to understand that there is no such thing as eternal love. I am grateful that you were once part of my world. But in my next life, no, in every life to come, I never want to meet you again.”
Kane broke down before he even reached the third line. Tears, something he had never shed in front of anyone, now fell heavily onto the phone
He couldn’t imagine how Aria must have felt when her heart was full of excitement because of her awakening, only to sense the crushing despair of his betrayal with his beta.
She must be devastated and hopeless.
An unbearable sorrow consumed him. The words she had spoken that day about leaving weren’t about a friend–she had been talking about herself. Her death had been foreshadowed, but he had failed to see it.
In his daze, Kane seemed to see his 22–year–old self staring at him with eyes full of disappointment. “You betrayed Aria. You broke the mate bond. As punishment, Aria is gone forever.”
The final two lines of her note were like daggers, tearing him apart. His beloved little wolf didn’t want to meet him again–not in any lifetime.
How much pain must she have endured to write those words?
And the one responsible for all of it was him.
