Chapter 28

Skye

I wake up with my stomach in revolt.

The nausea hits before I’m fully conscious, sharp and demanding. I barely make it to the bathroom before I’m retching into the toilet, my whole body shaking with the force of it.

This is getting worse.

When my stomach finally settles, I sink back against the cool tile wall, pressing my forehead to my

knees. The bathroom floor is hard and unforgiving, but I don’t have the energy to move yet.

Jaxon’s side of the bed was empty when I woke. It’s been empty most nights since Grandma Rose forced his apology. He’s been avoiding me, sleeping in his office or one of the guest rooms. Maybe he thinks giving me space will somehow fix things.

Or maybe he just can’t stand to be near me.

I force myself to stand, rinse my mouth, splash cold water on my face. The woman in the mirror looks pale, hollow-eyed. I’ll need more concealer today.

By the time I make it downstairs, Grandma Rose is already seated at the breakfast table with tea and toast. She looks up when I enter, her sharp eyes tracking my movements.

“Good morning, dear. You look tired.”

“I didn’t sleep well.” Not a lie.

I pour myself tea-chamomile, because coffee makes the nausea worse now, which is just fucking cruel -and force myself to sit. To act normal.

Grandma Rose studies me over the rim of her cup. “Are you feeling all right? You seem… different lately.”

My heart stutters. “Different how?”

“I’m not sure.” She tilts her head, considering. “Something about your scent, perhaps. Or your coloring.

You look a bit peaked.”

“It’s just stress,” I say quickly. Too quickly. “The situation with Cassandra and Liam has been… difficult.”

“Mm.” Grandma Rose doesn’t look convinced, but she lets it drop. “Well, you should see the pack doctor

if you’re not feeling well. No sense in letting things get worse.”

The irony almost makes me laugh. “I will. Thank you.”

The sound of footsteps on the stairs saves me from further questioning. Cassandra appears in the doorway, Liam’s hand clasped in hers. She’s wearing a soft pink sweater that makes her look innocent and maternal, her hair pulled back in a casual bun.

“Good morning,” she says brightly. “I hope we’re not intruding. Liam wanted to have breakfast with everyone today.”

“Of course not,” Grandma Rose says warmly. “Come sit, sweetheart.”

I watch Cassandra settle Liam into a chair, cutting his toast into small pieces with practiced ease. The

picture of domestic bliss. The mother Jaxon apparently wants.
