Chapter 29
Skye
Alone in my room that afternoon, preparing for the dinner, the dizziness hits.
One moment I’m standing at my closet selecting a dress, the next the room tilts sideways. I grab the doorframe to steady myself, breathing hard until the world rights itself.
This is getting dangerous.
I make my way to the mirror, studying my reflection with a critical eye. The changes are small but growing more noticeable each day. My breasts are fuller, tender to the touch. My face is slightly rounder, though I can still hide it with makeup. And my waist-
I turn sideways, pressing my hand to my stomach. There’s a curve there now that wasn’t before. Barely visible under loose clothing, but it won’t stay hidden much longer.
Two weeks. Maybe three if I’m lucky.
Then everyone will know.
I cross to my closet and pull out the locked box from behind my winter clothes. Inside: nearly ten thousand in cash, carefully saved over the past month. My passport. Birth certificate. Medical records. A list of contacts I’ve cultivated over three years as Luna-wolves who owe me favors, who might help
when the time comes.
And at the bottom, wrapped in tissue paper: a photo of myself from last month, before the pregnancy started showing. I want my child to know what I looked like before everything changed. Before I had to

choose between staying and surviving.
I add a pair of pearl earrings my mother gave me-one of the few things of hers I still have. Then I lock the box and hide it again.
Soon. It has to be soon.

The formal dinner is exactly as tedious as I expected.
Three visiting Alphas with their entourages, all seated around the long dining table in the formal hall. Jaxon at the head, playing the perfect host. Grandma Rose to his right, lending respectability. And me to his left, the dutiful Luna, smiling and making polite conversation.
Cassandra is notably absent. Jaxon deemed it “inappropriate” to have her at a formal pack function. At least he has some sense of propriety left. I bet my dear sister just loved that. The thought of Cassandra’s displeasure has the smallest of smirks twisting at my lips but I quickly school my features.
I’m seated next to Alpha Graham from the eastern mountains, a gruff older wolf who’s been making small talk about territory boundaries and trade agreements. I nod in the right places, ask the appropriate

questions, let my mind drift.
“-spoke with Nicolai Woolf recently,” Graham says, and my attention snaps back. “Strange request from the Woolf family. They don’t usually need anyone’s permission for anything. Must be important business.
My heart stops. “Oh?”
“Yes, he asked about safe passage through my territory. He must want his movements to remain unnoticed if he asked for permission instead of just taking what he wants.” Graham takes a drink of wine, oblivious to my internal panic. “I granted it, of course. You don’t refuse the Woolf family. But I wondered what could bring them this far south. They usually keep to the northern territories.”
I force my expression to stay neutral. “Perhaps they’re expanding their interests.”
