Chapter 66
Jaxon
I’m failing.
The realization hits me as I stand in an upscale boutique in town, staring at display cases full of jewelry with no idea what I should choose. Does Skye even wear jewelry?
I’m trying to court my own mate, and I have no idea how. Fuck me sideways!
“Can I help you find something?” The saleswoman approaches with a professional smile.
“I need a gift. For my wife.”
“Wonderful! What does she like? What’s her style?”
I open my mouth. Close it.
What does Skye like?
“She’s… elegant,” I try. “Classic.”
The saleswoman’s smile doesn’t waver, but I can see the pity in her eyes. She’s dealt with husbands like me before. Husbands who know nothing about their wives.
“How about this?” She pulls out a diamond bracelet. Delicate. Expensive. The kind of thing that screams”
I spent a lot of money because I don’t know what else to do.”
“Perfect,” I say, because what else can I say?
I buy it. It costs more than most pack members make in a year. And it feels completely hollow.
But it’s the ebay I’ve got.
That evening, I make a big production of presenting the bracelet to Skye over dinner, telling her sincerely that she’s beautiful and deserves to wear beautiful things.
She opens the box, and her expression is perfectly controlled.
“Thank you,” she says. “It’s lovely.”
She closes the box and sets it aside. Doesn’t try it on. Doesn’t smile. Doesn’t show any real reaction at all.
“You don’t like it,” I say.
“It’s very nice.” Her tone is polite. Distant. “Really. Thank you.”
But she doesn’t wear it. Not that night. Not the next day. Not ever, as far as I can tell.
I try again the following day. Flowers this time. An enormous bouquet of roses from the florist in town. Skye accepts them with the same polite distance.

“They’re beautiful.”
But I catch her wince slightly at the strong scent as she carries them to find a vase. Something about the smell bothers her. And I realize-if I’d been paying attention, if I’d noticed anything about her during this pregnancy, I would know that she’s developed an intolerance for overpowering scents.
I’m completely fucking this up and I have no idea how to fix it.
When it becomes painfully clear that gifts are not her love language, I try being more physically affectionate. I touch her hand at dinner, put my arm around her waist when we walk through the pack grounds together. I kiss her forehead before bed.
there alone with that smile fading from her face.
I wonder now how many moments like that we had. Moments where we almost connected. Where the bond almost had a chance to flourish. Where something real almost broke through the walls I’d built.
And how many times I’d chosen to pull away instead.
The realization sits heavy in my chest.
I didn’t just fail to build a relationship with my mate.
I actively destroyed every chance we had.
