Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 92

Chapter 92

Jaxon

I’m in a council meeting, attempting to focus on anything other than the shit show that is my life, when my phone buzzes with Marco’s name on the screen. A frisson of panic bolts through me. Why the hell is Skye’s father calling me. Pretty sure I’m the last person he wants to talk to.

I excuse myself immediately, stepping into the hallway to answer. “Alpha Winters.” I address him formally.

“Alpha Vale.” Marco’s voice is strained. “There’s been an incident involving Skye. She’s unharmed, but I thought you should know. Actually, she asked me to call you. She’s too shaken and exhausted to deal with this conversation herself but she didn’t want you to hear it through the grapevine.”

My blood runs cold. “What kind of incident?”

“An attack. Someone tried to grab her in the garden yesterday evening. She fought back, was able to yell for help, and the guards responded but the attacker escaped.” Marco pauses. “She and the baby are fine. But Jaxon… she’s not safe here.”

“I’m on my way.” I’m already searching for my keys. Where are my fucking keys?

“There’s something else you need to know-” But I hang up before he can finish. Whatever he wants to tell me can wait until I’m there, looking at Skye with my own eyes.

I burst back into the council room. “Meeting’s over. Emergency.” I turn and head right back out the door.

Noah follows me out. “What’s wrong?”

“Skye was attacked. It sounds like someone tried to take her.”

“Is she-”

“Marco says she and the baby are fine. But I need to get to Greenwood River Pack. Now. I won’t believe it until I see for myself.”

Noah doesn’t argue. Just follows me to my car. “I’m driving,” he says firmly.

“Noah-” I start to argue but he cuts me off.

“You’re not stable enough to do this alone. You’re about to walk into another Alpha’s territory after your pregnant ex-wife, your fated mate, was attacked. So I’m driving, and you’re going to try not to lose your shit before we get there.”

I want to argue. But he’s right. My hands are shaking with rage and fear. Someone put their hands on Skye. Threatened my child.

And I wasn’t there to protect them.

The drive to Greenwood River Pack takes way too long. Every minute feels like torture. I cycle through

rage, fear, and crushing guilt. Then back to rage again.

Someone attacked Skye. My Skye. The mother of my child. And where was I? In a fucking council meeting discussing shit that doesn’t matter. Not to me, not without her.

“This is my fault,” I say.

Noah glances at me. “How is this your fault?”

“If I’d been a better mate, she’d still be at Ironwood. Under my protection. Safe.”

“Jax-” I know that tone, the one that says he thinks I’m being ridiculous, but I can’t listen to him try to make me feel better about this.

“She left because of me. Because I made her life hell for three years. And now she’s in danger because she had to get away from me. Period. End of story.”

“You don’t know that-”

“Don’t I?” I turn to face Noah, daring him to contradict me again. “She’s only at her father’s pack because she divorced me. She’s only vulnerable because I drove her away. This is on me.”

Noah is quiet for a long moment.

She’s wearing joggers and an oversized t-shirt,a far cry from her usual chic, put-together look. Her face is pale, shadows under her eyes. But she’s standing. Moving. Alive.

Relief floods through me so intensely it’s almost painful.

“Skye-”

She turns, and I see her flinch slightly.

Not from fear. From exhaustion. Like dealing with me is the last thing she has energy for.

“Jaxon.” Her voice is flat. “My father called you.”

“Of course he did. Someone attacked you-” I still can’t fucking believe it, don’t want to. But the purple bruises in the shape of a handprint blooming on her arm are hard to ignore. It’s all I can do to contain the murderous rage roiling inside me.

“And I’m fine. The baby’s fine. We’ve been over this with the doctor three times. I asked my father to call because I didn’t want you to worry about your pup but there’s really no need.”

“You can’t go with Woolf.” The words come out more of a decree than I meant them to but the message stands. “You can’t go that far.”

Skye’s expression hardens. “I have to. It’s not safe here.”

“Then we’ll make it safe! More guards, better security-” I step closer. “Or you come back to Ironwood. I can protect you there.”

“I think the fuck not!”
