Thinking of this, Angelica glanced at Curtis, who was lying there in bed, looking so honest and harmless. ‘Who would’ve thought that before the accident, Curtis actually managed to do something that at least pleased me a bit.

Simon shot a sidelong glance at the bag sitting next to the lunchbox, then asked casually, “Angelica, did Curtis give you that bag?”

Angelica paused for a second, then nodded. “Yeah, he gave it to me for my birthday this year. Why do you ask?”

Simon grinned. “Nothing, really. Just thought if you ever get tired of it, I could get you the latest model.

Angelica smiled. “Sounds good. Thanks in advance, Simon.”

Once they stepped out of the hospital room and reached the stairs, Simon finally turned to his assistant, who had been waiting outside.

“Has that expert thief been discharged yet?”

“He’ll be released today if his follow–up checkup goes well,” the assistant replied.

“Good. As soon as he’s out, make sure he acts tonight. I want him to steal my sister’s bag, specifically that one. Got it?” Simon instructed.

“Understood.”

Simon wondered if he was just being paranoid, but lately, he was starting to realize that the girl he raised as his sister wasn’t nearly as innocent as he’d always believed.

That little reminder she gave him earlier felt almost calculated, like she was hoping to use him as a pawn against Victoria.

In the past, Simon never would’ve questioned his adopted sister’s motives. But now, the more he pieced things together, the more it sent chills down his spine.

He kept trying to convince himself it was just Victoria pushing him too hard lately, making him overthink everything. But Angelica’s recent behavior was starting to feel seriously out of character.

‘I need to dig up the truth and put my doubts to rest,‘ Simon thought. ‘Otherwise, I’ll never be able to treat Angelica like I used to, trusting her completely, without a single worry!‘

After her treatment, Victoria grabbed her lunchbox and left the hospital. The moment she got in the car, her phone buzzed with a message from Jackson.

Jackson: [Angelica just came to see me.]

Victoria: [Handle it yourself.)

After sending her reply, she tossed her phone onto the passenger seat.

But just as she did, her phone started ringing. It was Jackson calling.

Victoria looked puzzled, picked up her phone again, swiped to answer, and put it on speaker.

Angelica’s voice came through the phone almost immediately.

“Jackson, your engagement party is just two days away. If I don’t say this now, I’m afraid I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.

Jackson’s voice came through, cold as ever. “I don’t want to hear it. Why don’t you just keep regretting it for the rest of your life?”

Victoria laughed. ‘Wow, Jackson’s sense of humor is something else.‘

On the other end, Angelica went quiet.

Victoria could practically see her, trying to figure out how to keep the conversation going after Jackson shut her down.

“Jackson, I like you. The reason I didn’t stick around or marry you after your accident is because, if you couldn’t become the Thornton family heir, our marriage would lose its meaning. But honestly, that only mattered to my adoptive parents, not to me,” Angelica said.

Victoria snorted. ‘Here she goes again, throwing people under the bus and playing the victim.

“I want to marry you because I like you as a person, not because of your status. Even if you weren’t the heir, I’d still care about you.”

Honestly, she always managed to sound so sympathetic. Too bad Jackson wasn’t buying it.

Jackson’s voice cut in again. “Stop. My ears are getting polluted.”

Victoria nearly burst out laughing. ‘Seriously, is Jackson really going to piss off Angelica after she worked so hard to set the mood?‘

Angelica went quiet again.

After a long pause, she finally spoke up, her voice a little awkward.

“Jackson, whether you believe me or not, I’ve said everything I wanted to say. I don’t know if you gave in to reality and settled for Victoria, but honestly, it doesn’t matter to me. If you ever want to come back, I’ll always be here waiting for you.”

“I won’t bother you anymore. I’ll head out now.”

“I won’t seeing you out.”

After some rustling noises, the call finally came through clear on the other end.

“Did you hear that?” Jackson’s smooth voice came through.

Victoria laughed. “Yeah, I heard you.”

“Are you happy?”

“Yeah, I’m happy.”

“Good.”

“I never thought you’d actually pull something like that,” Victoria joked, laughing softly.

“I’m just giving you something to laugh about so your drive isn’t so boring.”

Victoria’s grin got even wider. “That was awesome. I’m definitely entertained. Let’s do this again sometime.”

“No way, I don’t want a next time. I’m not kidding. Her words seriously polluted my ears,” Jackson said with his usual dry wit.

Victoria said, “If she’s got any sense, she’ll stop making a fool of herself by bothering you again.”

“Let’s hope she’s not thick–skinned enough to try,” Jackson said sincerely. After a short pause, he reminded her warmly, “Alright, you’ve had your fun. Keep your eyes on the road.”

“Okay! I’m definitely not looking for round two,” Victoria replied.

After hanging up, Victoria felt totally energized like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders, and for some reason, she just felt great.

Her crush on Jackson wasn’t just about his looks anymore.

Back at Goldenwood Villa, Victoria took a nap, had dinner, then went out to the backyard to work on her newly expanded herb garden, planting seeds and fertilizing the soil.

When she finished, she latched the gate and was just about to head back inside when someone called out to her.

“Miss Victoria.” A middle–aged man calling out was the butler from Silverwood Villa.

Victoria latched the gate and turned around. “What’s the matter?”

The butler from Silverwood Villa said, “Miss Sirena came back specially for your engagement party. She’s waiting for you in the main hall and wants you there within ten minutes.”

First off, it was the butler from Silverwood Villa delivering the news, not Milton from the main house. So Sirena came back to the Binder family without even telling the patriarch. She notified Victoria first, before anyone else.

Second, she specifically said Victoria had to show up within ten minutes.

‘She talks about throwing her weight around,‘ Victoria thought.

Plus, Sirena didn’t even show up at her welcome party last Saturday. Clearly, Victoria wasn’t even on her radar.

‘Looks like she doesn’t come back just to wish me well. There’s definitely something else going on. Whatever her real agenda is, I will figure it out tomorrow when we finally meet face–to–face. As for tonight, let her with all her airs wait as long as she wants, Victoria thought, smirking to herself.

“Miss Victoria, you might want to think this through. Are you really too busy? You’ve got time to work in the garden, but you can’t spare a few minutes to see her? If I tell her exactly what happened, she might take offense.”

Victoria was just about to walk away when she heard the butler’s thinly veiled warning. She stopped, let out a soft laugh, then turned to look at the middle–aged man in gold–rimmed glasses, raising an eyebrow. “Is that supposed to be a threat?”
