Darell was taken aback by Gerry’s words. “Mr. Thornton, you mean Mr. Cooke is a VIP tonight too? Are you absolutely sure there’s no mistake?”

Gerry frowned at the suspicion. “Jackson handed me the guest list himself. You really think he’d make something up?”

“Mr. Thornton, that’s not what I meant…” Darell realized he’d been too anxious and quickly apologized, but he pressed Jackson, “Jackson, did you invite Mr. Cooke yourself?”

Jackson could see exactly why Darell was so uneasy. He gave a relaxed smile. “No, not me. Victoria was the one who gave me the list with Mr. Cooke’s name on it.”

Darell’s expression changed dramatically, and he almost stumbled.

Simon, standing behind him, quickly reached out to steady his father. In all his life, he’d never seen his father look so unsettled.

Darell pushed Simon’s hand away, trying to steady himself, but when he looked up, he caught Victoria’s taunting gaze.

‘So Victoria doesn’t just know the Cooke family’s only son, but she also has enough pull to talk directly to the real boss?‘ He thought, his mind reeling.

No way. Unless I see Mr. Cooke in person, there’s no way I’m believing that girl could really get him to show up at her engagement party.

She’s just trying to mess with me. That girl’s way too cunning,‘ Darell scoffed inwardly.

Victoria laughed at Darell’s shaky composure. “Uncle, why do you look so pale? Mr. Cooke’s coming to my engagement party tonight, so you won’t have to jump through hoops just to meet him. You should be happy, right?”

Hearing her obvious taunt, Darell felt his anger flare, but he had to hold it in with so many Thorntons watching.

If Mr. Cooke really shows up at your engagement party, of course we’ll thank you, Victoria” Simon said, his words laced with sarcasm. “But let’s see if he actually comes tonight. Maybe your pull isn’t as strong as you think.”

Simon was convinced Victoria wouldn’t be smug for long tonight. Even if she survived, she definitely wouldn’t come out unscathed.

Victoria replied with a dismissive tone, “I get it. You guys just won’t stop until you’re proven wrong. No problem. When Mr. Cooke shows up, I’ll personally introduce you all and let him see what you guys are really like.”

Just then, Angelica spoke up softly, “Victoria, today’s your engagement party with Jackson. There’s no need to be so sharp tongued and stir up trouble among us. It’s fine to vent a little here, but let’s keep it down in front of the guests. Let’s not air our family scandals in public.”

Victoria let out a cold laugh. “Oh, please. You, the adopted daughter my mother schemed to swap with me, parading around. here pretending to be a real member of the Binder family? That’s already the biggest family scandal we’ve got. What more is there to hide?”

Annie snickered. She’d just watched Victoria put Pierre in his place, and now she was calling out Angelica. For her, it was just too satisfying to watch.

Victoria shot Annie another glance. ‘No wonder she’s the daughter of the third Thornton sibling, the one who always keeps things neutral. So far, Annie’s the only one who hasn’t shown any hostility toward me or Jackson.

As long as Annie didn’t cause any drama tonight, Victoria had no intention of messing with her.

Angelica just stood there, speechless.

Simon held Angelica’s wrist, speaking up for her with determination. “To us, Angelica is family, not a disgrace.”

Angelica looked up at Simon, gratitude shining in her eyes.

Darell didn’t want to keep sparring with Victoria. He just wanted to check in with Sirena for an update, so he said, “Mr. Thornton, we’ll go check out the party hall and see if we can lend a hand.”

“Alright,” Gerry said, instructing a servant to lead the way. He swept his gaze over his family in the hall. “If you guys have nothing else going on, go with the Binder family and help welcome the VIPS at the party hall.”

“Got it, Grandpa!” Annie was the first to jump up, rushing over to Victoria with a big smile. “Victoria, anything you need me to do?”

She’d made up her mind. She was definitely hitching her wagon to Victoria from now on.

Victoria grinned at Annie’s friendly gesture. “Honestly, as long as you don’t mess things up like Pierre, that’s the best help you could give me.”

Annie patted her chest and promised, “You got it, Victoria! I swear I won’t mess things up for you or Jackson!”

As for her daughter’s choice, Helen didn’t try to stop her. She’d raised Annie for so long, so she trusted her to make her own decisions.

Faye and Xavier were openly contemptuous of Annie cozying up to Victoria. For them, as a Thornton, flattering Victoria who was not even on their level was just embarrassing for the family.

Thomas said, “Xavier, Faye, let’s go. Just do what your grandpa said. Go to the party hall and see if you can help out.”

“Got it, Dad, Xavier and Faye replied, getting to their feet.

As they passed by Pierre and Felix, Xavier sneered, “Didn’t I tell you? It’s still anyone’s game.”

Faye also snickered under her breath, “Pierre, watching you shoot yourself in the foot is honestly hilarious. If you’re not smart, don’t try to act clever.”

Felix’s face darkened.

Pierre shot a guilty glance at Felix.

As Xavier walked past Jackson, he suddenly stopped in his tracks, lowering his head to look at Jackson sitting in his wheelchair.

Jackson sat there in silence, his face completely unreadable.

Xavier’s lips curled into a mocking smile as he spoke, “Jackson, even though your engagement with Angelica didn’t work out, Victoria doesn’t seem any less impressive than her. You really lucked out, man. I wish you and Victoria a lifetime of mutual respect, lasting unity, and… sticking together through life and death.”

He put extra emphasis on the words “through life and death“. It was clear there was a hidden meaning behind his words.

The meaning couldn’t be clearer. If Xavier ever made a move against Jackson, he’d make sure Victoria was caught in the

crossfire too.

Jackson’s eyes, usually as deep and still as a midnight lake, suddenly flashed with a chilling cold at Xavier’s open threat.

But he just responded calmly, “I’ll take that blessing.”

Those simple words radiated a silent pressure that made everyone tense up.

Xavier absolutely hated how Jackson always kept that unshakable composure, never showing a hint of emotion. It was like nothing could ever get to him, no matter how tough or dangerous things became.

But that was exactly how it was.

Ever since Jackson took over that tiny subsidiary from Gerry and built it into a powerhouse, he became a thorn in a lot of people’s sides. He always managed to handle whatever dirty tricks or disasters people threw at him.

The only exception was when he got both legs broken rescuing Sibley from a kidnapping, even though they weren’t related by blood.

‘But was it really just an accident? No, I know for sure Jackson must’ve been betrayed by his own family, stabbed in the back by the people closest to him,‘ Xavier thought.

With that in mind, he believed Jackson was basically all alone now. Everyone had turned their backs on him, except for Gerry. No family left to cover for him, and he was just a pitiful guy hanging on by a thread. Taking him down now would be so easy for Xavier.
