His words made the smile on Darell’s face freeze instantly.

Hector sneered, “Darell, don’t bother. Mr. Cooke’s here tonight just for Victoria’s engagement party, not to talk business with
you.”
Stephan snorted, making it clear he had no intention of saving Darell any face in front of everyone. His words were sharp and direct. “With that attitude, he thinks he can work with our company? He must be out of his mind.”
At that moment, the guests who were already seated started gossiping again.
So, what’s the deal between Mr. Cooke and Darell?”
Looks like Darell was trying to cozy up to Mr. Cooke, but Mr. Cooke totally shut him down.”
And from what I can tell, Mr. Cooke’s here tonight just for Victoria. He didn’t come because the Thornton family invited
im.”
I’ve heard all about the Binder family mess. At the welcome party, Victoria spilled the beans that Darell and his wife are her eal parents, but they didn’t want her because she was from the countryside. They’d rather stick with their adopted daughter han acknowledge their own flesh and blood.”
Victoria is no ordinary girl. She actually knows those three former heavyweights from Benwig City!”
It’s a huge loss for Darell not to recognize his real daughter.”
is the gossip swirled around him, Darell felt even more awkward.
Not far behind him, Julia, Simon, and Angelica were all watching the drama unfold. Hearing Stephan’s remarks and the uests‘ chatter, their faces were a sight to behold. Shock, embarrassment, and disbelief all mixed together.
Calvin looked at Darell with clear disappointment in his eyes.
t was clear now. Darell was completely out of the running for control of the pharmaceutical company.
irena looked at Bater in disbelief, lowering her voice to demand, “Bater, what’s going on? Didn’t you say Mr. Cooke would lo you a favor and talk business with Darell?”
Sater, clearly annoyed by her questioning, shot back, “Yeah, I’m the second son of the Clark family. Who in Benwig City wouldn’t give me some respect? Even the Thornton family would! But how was I supposed to know Mr. Cooke and Victoria re actually that close?”
He didn’t bother to keep his voice down, so Calvin, Simon, and Angelica all heard him loud and clear. They immediately hifted their attention from Darell to Sirena and Bater.
Noticing the family’s stares, Sirena grabbed Bater’s arm under the table. “Keep your voice down..”
Thinking about her bet with Victoria, Sirena felt her chest tighten. “I told you, if I can’t get Darell a meeting with Mr. Cooke, ‘ll have to kneel and apologize to Victoria!”
Bater cut her off, sounding annoyed. “Come on, just showing up tonight is already doing you and your Binder family a favor. Why would you make a bet like that with a kid without even knowing the details? Honestly, you brought this on yourself?”
Sirena was so angry she could barely catch her breath. “If you hadn’t sworn up and down you’d help, would I have been so confident betting with Victoria? Now that things have gone wrong, you’re just dumping everything on me. Bater, we’ve been

married for years. Do you even care at all?”
Bater just shrugged. “Don’t forget, this is just a business marriage.”

Just as Sirena was fuming and Darell wished the ground would swallow him up, Victoria’s bright, melodious voice suddenly rang out across the party hall.
“Stephan, Nerom, Yorine, you’re here!”
Hearing Victoria’s voice, Stephan, who had just been wearing a look of contempt, instantly broke into a warm smile and turned toward the entrance.
“Victoria!”
Victoria pushed Jackson’s wheelchair, quickly weaving through the crowd and tables to reach Stephan and the other two.
“Stephan, thanks for making the trip all the way from the village!”
Stephan waved it off. “Please, Victoria, this is your engagement party. Even if we were on another planet, we’d still find a way to get here!”
Nerom added, “But we’ve got a project that’s really behind schedule, so the others couldn’t come. We’re just here to represent everyone and show our support.”
Victoria knew that Stephan, Nerom, and Yorine were three of the most influential people in Benwig City. Having them here was a huge honor.
“Oh, anyway, let me introduce you. This is my fiancé, Jackson, the eldest son of the Thornton family,” Victoria said proudly.
“Hello Stephan, Nerom, Yorine,” Jackson greeted them with a warm, polite smile.
Stephan waggled his eyebrows and grinned. “See? Didn’t I tell you? Victoria’s fiancé is a pretty good–looking guy. Last time I saw him was back in the village.”
Yorine gave Jackson an approving once–over, then nodded. “Yeah, he’s definitely a handsome one.”
Darell was left hanging, feeling more awkward than ever. He was stuck, not sure if he should he leave or stay.
Just as he made up his mind to head back to his seat, Victoria turned to him. “Oh, Stephan, Uncle Darell wanted to talk to you about a business deal.”
She glanced at Darell, who was about to walk away. “Uncle Darell, the guy you’ve been so eager to meet is right here. Why aren’t you saying anything? Are you so excited you’re lost for words?”
Darell stopped in his tracks, grumbling inwardly about how Victoria just never lets up.
Daisy laughed. “He already tried to talk to Mr. Cooke, but as soon as Mr. Cooke realized who he was, he was so put off he didn’t even want to hear him out.”
“Well, looks like there’s nothing you can do, Uncle Darell. Even when you get a shot, you’re just as useless as your favorite adopted daughter,” Victoria kept up her teasing, then shifted her gaze to Sirena sitting beside Calvin. “Stephan, could you come with me to greet my aunt, Sirena?”
Stephan answered with a hearty grin, “No trouble at all. I’m here tonight. Whatever you need, I’m game.”
Victoria pushed Jackson’s wheelchair toward the Binder family’s table.

As she walked over, Sirena’s face became more and more awkward.
“Aunt Sirena,” Victoria greeted.

Sirena managed an awkward smile and inwardly hoping Victoria wouldn’t make her lose face in front of everyone.
But Victoria wasn’t about to let her off the hook. “Do you still remember our bet?”
Sirena clenched her fists under the table, her embarrassment turning into resentment. She took a deep breath and replied reluctantly, “Yeah, I remember.”
“Great, I knew you weren’t old enough to be forgetful yet,” Victoria said with a sweet, almost teasing smile. “I care about the family’s reputation, so I won’t make you kneel and say sorry in front of everyone. We’ll save that little show for tomorrow.”
Victoria always put extra emphasis on the word “kneel,” and every time Sirena heard it, her expression soured a little more.
