“Dad, Julia and I will take Simon and Angelica to the hospital right away…” Darell said.

Before he could finish, Calvin waved him off coldly. “Go. Don’t waste any time. Victoria’s engagement party doesn’t need you

here.”

Darell felt frustrated by Calvin’s cold attitude, but he had no choice except to swallow his feelings and lead his wife and kids out of the engagement party.

Angelica walked toward the door, her steps heavy with emotion. Just as she was about to cross the threshold, Jackson’s sincere, heartfelt voice proposing behind her made a surge of indescribable bitterness rise up in her chest.

She covered her swollen, red face with both hands and turned to stare directly at the stage.

Watching Jackson propose to Victoria, Gavin, refusing to give up, tossed aside the battered bouquet of roses and made a move to rush the stage and take her back.

But before he could even get close, someone suddenly yanked a sack over his head from behind, and his vision went dark.

He tried to call out, but his head started spinning, and before he knew it, he blacked out.

On stage, Victoria reached out to Jackson without a moment’s hesitation, her voice strong and unwavering. “I do!”

“I’m sure plenty of you here know me and have heard the rumors. That’s right, I’m the chairman of the Cooke family. You all know exactly where we stand in Benwig City. So let me say this loud and clear. If anyone dares to mess with Victoria like Cassian did tonight, you’re going up against the Cooke family. And trust me, you’ll have to deal with the consequences.”

The guests from families less powerful than the Cooke family in Benwig City went dead quiet, afraid to even breathe.

Once Stephan sat down, the guests started whispering and gossiping among themselves.

Over at the Thornton family’s table, Felix glanced at Xavier and quietly reminded him, “Xavier, you saw it yourself. With the Cooke family backing Victoria, Jackson’s got a huge advantage now that he’s marrying her. It won’t be easy for you to grab the heir position anymore.”

Xavier scoffed. “So what if Victoria’s got the Cooke family behind her? At best, they’ll just protect her. No way they’d dare meddle in our Thornton family affairs.”

“Xavier, looks like you’re hell–bent on snagging the Thornton heir spot,” Felix joked.

Xavier snorted. “Felix, drop the snide act. Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. You’re just waiting for me to take down Jackson so you can sit back and scoop up the leftovers, right? You really think you’re the only smart one here and everyone else is just clueless, huh?”

Felix stopped smiling, caught off guard by Xavier calling him out.

Xavier kept sneering, “Go ahead, keep watching from the sidelines. Let’s see if you actually get to cash in, or end up with nothing at all!”

After the engagement party ended, Victoria and Jackson were seeing the guests off when Victoria suddenly asked in surprise, “How did Gavin just disappear all of a sudden?”

Jackson’s dark eyes flashed as he smiled. “I called Gavin’s dad. He probably took him home.”

Victoria just nodded and didn’t ask any more. ‘Gavin’s been a pain since we broke up, but at least he never stooped to teaming up with Cassian to hurt me. Guess he’s got some integrity after all‘

Just then, Jackson’s father and his two brothers walked over.

“Jackson, who would’ve thought your own brother would cripple you? I really feel bad for you,” Felix said, feigning sympathy. “If we hadn’t brought Cassian back, you wouldn’t have ended up like this. Grandpa was going to officially name you the Thornton heir tonight. Such a pity.”

Pierre, following behind Felix, put on a look of mock apology. “Jackson, sorry about the plan to send you a hundred wheelchairs at your engagement party. If I’d known your own brother was the one who did this to you, I wouldn’t have rubbed salt in the wound and made things worse for you.”

They acted like they cared, but every word was a jab at Jackson, twisting the knife in the wound of being betrayed by his own brother.
