But now that they’re both barely keeping themselves afloat, whoever took Cassian must be up to something else.

Jackson had planned to stash Cassian away on his private island, waiting for Ollie to confirm whether Cassian was really his brother before deciding what to do next.

But now, it looked like someone was already trying to use Cassian against him.

The only ones with that kind of motive were the Thornton family. He had to wait and see what they would do

next.

Understood. I’ll focus the investigation on Xavier and Felix,Ollie said with a nod.

Jackson headed to the office first, cleaning up the issues Cassian left after managing the company for a month. When he noticed it was already noon, he called Victoria.

Vickie, what are you up to?he asked.

Just got out of the auction. Did you finish dealing with Cassian’s stuff?Victoria replied.

Not yet. I’ll tell you when we meet,” he said.

Alright. Where are you? I’ll come find you,she said.

I’m at the office,Jackson replied.

Got it,Victoria said.

After hanging up, Jackson couldn’t help but smile. These days, he found himself looking forward to his daily therapy more than anything else.

Annie texted Gavin: [Honey, you know Jackson’s always texting me, so I got this number only for you. Otherwise, I’d be driven crazy.]

After sending the message to Gavin, Annie handed the phone back to Victoria with a mischievous grin. Victoria, that was Jackson on the phone, right?

You’re going to lunch with him later, so I’ll leave you two alone. Otherwise, Jackson would kill me. I’ll wait for Gavin to take the bait and start chatting with me.”

Victoria raised an eyebrow. So you’re taking the heat for me?

Annie waved it off. Hey, I’ve got nothing better to do anyway. I’ll keep Gavin occupied for you. It’s a way to kill time.

Just then, Annie’s phone buzzed.

She picked it up, glanced at the screen, and laughed. Gavin totally took the bait. He messaged me.

Victoria grinned, relieved. Perfect, he’s all yours now.

You can count on me. From now on, Gavin won’t ever bother you again,Annie said, patting her chest.

After dropping Annie off at home, Victoria headed to Thornton Group.

She parked by the curb outside the Thornton Group headquarters, pulled out her phone, and called Jackson.

Jack, I’m here. Where are we eating?she asked.

I’ve ordered lunch. We’re eating in my office today. Wait downstairs. I’ll have Ollie come get you,Jackson replied.

Okay,Victoria replied.

After hanging up, Victoria grabbed the firstaid kit she’d left in the car, walked into the Thornton Group headquarters, and settled onto a sofa in the lobby.

inutes later, Ollie hurried over.

nder,Ollie greeted her.

Ollie,Victoria replied.

Mr. Thornton’s waiting for you upstairs,Ollie said, leading Victoria to the executive elevator. Here’s the access card. Next time you visit, use it to take the private elevator straight up.

Thanks,Victoria replied, taking the card.

The elevator went all the way up to the top floor. Ollie brought Victoria to Jackson’s office, knocked, and said through the intercom, Mr. Thornton, Ms. Binder’s here.”

Almost instantly, the door slid open a bit. Ollie pushed it wider. Ms. Binder, please come on in.”

Victoria walked in, and Ollie closed the door behind her. She headed over to the window and found Jackson sitting there in his wheelchair.

He had a laptop resting on his lap, his head slightly lowered as he worked.

Victoria stood there for a while, watching him. Since his wheelchair put his line of sight almost level with the desk, the desktop computer was useless, so he used the laptop instead.

Still, Jackson was seriously absorbed in his work.

Sunlight spilled over his hair, which was styled just right, not too stiff, not too messy, casting a soft golden

His facial features and profile looked even clearer and more refined in the shadows.

His long fingers danced across the keyboard, and even the sound of his typing seemed almost musical.

For a moment, Victoria didn’t want to disturb him.

But Jackson soon looked up, flashing her a soft, warm smile. His charming eyes lit up with a glimmer, like starlight in the night.

Vickie, you’re here,he said.

His

eyes were full of affection, and his smile was so clean and sincere that it felt almost unreal.

Victoria remembered what Annie had told her at the auction. Jackson might sit at the top, but he was the kind of guy who wore his heart on his sleeve.

That was exactly why Cassian and Sibley had the chance to hurt him.

u,Victoria said, watching as Jackson rolled his wheelchair toward her.

s hand froze on the wheels. He stared at her, searching her face to see if she was joking.

When he saw how serious she was, he grinned and teased, What, Vickie? You just decided you like me? So all this time, I’ve been the only one crushing on you?

Victoria walked over to the sofa by the coffee table and sat down, not bothering to hide her feelings. Of course not. I want you to know, for real, that I like you.

Jackson chuckled softly. Then say it more often. I love hearing you say that.

He’d heard plenty of women confess they liked him, but it never made him feel a thing.

Sometimes, it even turned him off. Only Victoria could really shake him up

inside.

I can’t say it all the time. It’s gotta be the right moment, you know? Just now felt right, so I blurted it out,Victoria admitted.

She glanced at the food on the coffee table and took a deep sniff. Wow, smells great. Jack, you’ve got good taste when it comes to food.

After praising him, she picked up the utensils already set out and, without a second thought, snagged a fancy- looking shrimp and popped it in her mouth.

Jackson picked up his fork and grinned. You know that saying? Love and good food are the only things worth indulging in.

He paused and then asked, So, what did you end up bidding on at the auction today?

I got a pendant for my mom, but I wasn’t there to bid. I just wanted to make Simon desperate,Victoria said.

She told Jackson everything, including how she got Simon to go rescue a woman from Pierre for her.

Jackson was there when Victoria poisoned Simon, so he laughed after hearing the whole story. Yeah, that must’ve felt pretty hopeless for Simon.

And getting him to provoke Pierre? That was a clever move.”

What about you? What happened to Cassian? Did those people get to him?Victoria asked.

Someone took him away before I did,” Jackson replied.

Victoria froze midchew, her eyes suddenly lighting up with interest as Jackson said that.
