Chapter 164
Angelica was taken aback by Victoria’s question on the phone, but quickly caught on–Victoria was deliberately probing, trying to see how much she mattered to Simon.
Before, Angelica would’ve been sure Simon would pick her.
But the fact that Simon went to Victoria alone meant he cared more about his own survival. He’d definitely choose himself.
So Angelica needed to strike first.
“Simon, you don’t have to worry about me. Just let her detox you. I’ll handle the poison in my body myself. I promise I won’t be a burden to you!” she said.
Her voice was gentle yet unwavering as it came through Simon’s phone.
“See? Your sister really knows how to play her cards,” Victoria teased, smirking at Simon. She could tell Angelica was using reverse psychology, but still couldn’t resist poking fun at him.
If Victoria hadn’t deliberately called Angelica and confronted him about it, Simon would have chosen to detox himself first. Once he was clear, he could focus on helping Angelica without any distractions.
But now, with Angelica waiting for his answer on the other end of the line–and her telling him to choose himself without hesitation–how could he really pick himself over Angelica and let her down?
‘Would that even make me a real brother? A man with any real sense of duty?‘ Simon thought.
‘If Curtis were here, he’d probably disdain me as a brother, Simon thought.
Victoria absolutely loathed Angelica. If Simon missed this shot, Victoria would never lift a finger to save Angelica again. But Simon was her own brother; no matter how much she despised him, she wouldn’t actually let him die.
In that brief moment, Simon’s mind raced, torn in every direction.
“Honestly, neither you nor your sister’s poison will kill you. One will make you wish you were dead from the pain, the other will ruin your face. So, Simon, what’s your choice?” Victoria pressed him again.
Angelica’s voice was calm but firm. “Victoria, stop asking Simon. Just help him detox. I don’t need your help.
Simon shook himself out of his thoughts and said, “Victoria, are you testing me like this because you’re still upset we chose Angelica over you?”
Victoria smirked, rolling her eyes. “Enough. Don’t read too much into it. It grosses me out. I just want to see how close your siblings really are.”
Simon gave her a knowing look. “If I pick Angelica, you’ll probably hate me even more as your brother, but I’m still choosing her.”

Angelica’s voice came through the phone, urgent. “Simon…”

“It’s okay, Angelica. You don’t have to say anything. This is what I owe you as your brother,” Simon said. Then he turned to Victoria and explained, “Victoria, I’m asking you to detox Angelica, not because I care about her more than you, but because I want to do right by her one last time as her brother. Once you help her, I’ll make sure she leaves the Binder family. From now on, I’ll show you I truly want to make things right with you. Even if I can’t get rid of the poison myself, I promise I won’t ever push you aside or give you a hard time because of Angelica again.”
Angelica’s tactic of playing it cool and letting Simon choose never failed to work. Her reverse psychology always hit the mark.
And just like that, Simon ended up playing right into her hands.
Hearing Simon’s answer, Angelica inwardly breathed a sigh of relief.
‘Thank goodness! Simon really did choose to save me in the end!‘ Angelica thought, her heart soaring.
Victoria let out a mocking laugh. “Angelica, congrats. Simon picked you. Just come find me whenever you want to be detoxed. Or you can skip it, since you just insisted you didn’t need my help.”
Angelica’s voice came through the phone with that righteous tone. “If I give up the chance for you to detox me, will you help Simon instead?”
Simon jumped in right away. “Angelica, don’t do anything unnecessary!”
“Simon…” Angelica’s voice was soft, almost pleading.
“Enough. I’ll deal with my own poison. This is the last thing I can do for you. After this, leave the Binder family and take care of yourself,” Simon said, his tone firm.
Victoria hung up, tossed the phone back to Simon, and smirked. “Simon, since this is your call, just make sure you don’t regret it later.”
Simon was about to say he wouldn’t, but Victoria suddenly asked, “How’s Curtis doing?”
Simon blinked in surprise. He never expected Victoria to care about Curtis. He hurried to answer, “He still hasn’t woken up.”
At that, Simon asked, puzzled, “What exactly did you do when you snuck into Curtis’s hospital room that day?”
This time, Victoria didn’t bother hiding it. “Nothing much. I just kept him conscious.”
Simon paused. “Kept him conscious?”
He looked even more confused. “So you mean you already woke Curtis up? Then why is he still unconscious?”
Victoria replied, “I just kept his mind awake, but his body still can’t move at all.”
“Why did you do that?” Simon pressed, clearly not believing she’d do something like this for no reason.

Victoria just smirked, playing coy. “If you really want to know, wait until I take the needle out of Curtis’s head and he wakes up. Then you can ask him yourself.”

Once the call ended, Angelica caught her reflection in the mirror–her face was still puffy, but her eyes sparkled with renewed hope.
‘Finally, I can get rid of the poison, and my face will be back to normal!‘ Angelica thought, her heart racing.
The phone on her vanity rang.
Angelica glanced at the caller ID–it was Julia. She let it ring for a bit before answering.
“Mom,” she said.
“Angelica, I’m not coming home tonight. Can you spend some time with Curtis and keep him company for me? Alright?” Julia instructed.
“Sure, I’ll take good care of Curtis. Don’t worry. By the way, Mom, how’s everything going on your Angelica asked, her voice full of concern.
end?”
“Everything’s going great. Once those two experts arrive tonight, I’ll bring them to the Binder family tomorrow to cleanse Grandpa or break the curse. That way, Victoria won’t have anywhere left to hide!” Julia said, her voice full of determination.
“That’s great. At least Simon didn’t suffer from the poison for nothing,” Angelica replied.
“What poison?” Julia cried out in shock.
“Well…” Angelica explained how Victoria had poisoned Simon. “He said the poison can’t be detected, so even if we told Grandpa, it wouldn’t help. That’s why he’s being threatened.”
“That damn Victoria! Hurting Curtis wasn’t enough for her. Now she wants to take Simon down, too! Once Grandpa wakes up and throws her out of the Binder family, I’ll make sure she pays for it!” Julia’s voice was laced with a hatred Angelica had never heard before. “Alright, hurry up and go keep Curtis company at the hospital.”
“Okay, Mom,” Angelica replied.
After hanging up, Angelica packed up her things, planning to see Victoria for the antidote before heading to the hospital. As she reached the bottom of the stairs, she ran into Simon coming home. Instantly, she suppressed her excitement, putting on a guilty and sorrowful expression as she looked at him. “Simon…”
Simon saw her wearing sunglasses and a mask, clearly about to leave. “Where are you headed?” he asked.
“Mom went back to her hometown yesterday to find someone who can exorcise evil or break Grandpa’s curse. She just called and said she won’t be back tonight, so she wants me to go to the hospital and spend some time with Curtis,” Angelica explained, carefully leaving out her plan to see Victoria for the antidote. She didn’t want Simon to think she was being selfish or only caring about herself.
