Chapter 22

That’s right. Keep cursing. It’ll help you stay awake.Victoria sounded satisfied as she picked up the knife again and went on with what she was doing to Simon’s foot.

Simon screamed again, his face turning a sickly pale. But this time, he didn’t pass out.

Victoria gave a small nod, pleased. That should do it. I only crippled your right leg. You should count yourself lucky. You crushed both my herbs with your right foot. If you’d used both, you wouldn’t be walking at all today?

She tossed the knife aside, then fed him a pill that restored his ability to move. Rising to her feet, she looked down at him. admiring her work. Go on. Try standing. See if your right foot still works.”

Simon felt strength return to his body. Gritting his teeth through the pain, he pushed himself up with both hands.

But the moment he tried to put weight on his right foot, all he felt was pain. There was no strength in it at all.

His heart dropped. His right foot was really crippled. He had never imagined it would end like this.

He had come here to teach Victoria a lesson, to stand up for Angelica. Instead, he was the one left broken. He couldn’t accept

  1. it.

The pride he had always held so high shattered in an instant. He grabbed his head and broke down, his voice shaking. No. I don’t want to be crippled-

Boring.” Victoria watched him fall apart, her lips curling in disdain.

She had thought he was stronger than this. It was just one leg, and he was already falling to pieces.

He had

dea what she had been through over the past twenty years, how many times she had walked through life and death and come out the other side.

In her eyes, he had grown up sheltered from everything, so it took almost nothing to

ush him.

She turned to leave, but a sudden round of applause came from behind her.

Victoria’s eyes narrowed. She turned and froze for a split second.

Jackson?Confusion flickered across her face. What are you doing here?

Jackson smiled, warm and calm. Ollie pushed Jackson’s wheelchair forward. I came to see the place where my legs were ruined. I didn’t expect to catch a show like this. That was impressive.

Victoria tilted her head, studying him. So you were brought here and had your legs crippled, huh?

Jackson nodded. His hand moved to rest lightly on his legs. His gaze dropped, lashes trembling faintly, as if something in his

memory had stirred.

His voice softened. Just like your brother. I was fully conscious when they broke my legs.

Victoria had never been good at comforting people. In the past twenty years, she had faced more lifeanddeath situations than she could count. What carried her through was never empty words.

She understood one thing very clearlyif she wanted to survive, she had to become stronger. She had to be strong enough

that no one could hurt her.

So whenever she had the talent for something, she pushed herself to master it completely. She studied until there was nothing left to learn and no one could surpass her, like with her medical skills.

When it came to traditional medicine, she wouldn’t claim she was the best in history. But in this day and age, she didn’t believe anyone could beat her.

Jackson, don’t worry, she said. I told you I can fix your legs. I will.

Jackson looked up at her, meeting her clear, steady gaze, and smiled. I believe you.

He took out a clean white handkerchief. Without waiting for Ollic, he pushed his wheelchair closer himself.

Under Victoria’s puzzled gaze, he gently took her hand and wiped the blood from her fingers.

Life in the Binder family isn’t as easy as you said,he said quietly.

Victoria glanced down at his careful movements, then smiled, a hint of amusement in her eyes. It’s easy enough. Didn’t you just see me deal with one of them?

Jackson smiled back. He found himself liking her more and more.

What about you?Victoria moved behind him and took over the wheelchair. Why were you brought here? Why did they break your legs? Want to talk about it? I’m not in a hurry to go back yet.

Jackson lowered his eyes again, lashes trembling slightly, though his lips still held that gentle smile. Sure. If you want to know.

Of course I do. When you have time, you’ll have to tell me everything.Victoria turned her hand over after he finished wiping the back of it. I want to understand you better.

Watching H careful he was, she teased, Have you ever done this for Angelica?

Jackson didn’t pause for even a second. No.

Afraid she might not believe him, Ollie quickly added from the side, Mr. Thornton really hasn’t.

Victoria raised a brow. Even if he had, you wouldn’t necessarily know.

Ollie didn’t know what to say to that. Back when Jackson’s legs were fine, there had never been any need for him to do something like this for a woman.

As for now, Ollie couldn’t tell if this was really love at first sight, as Jackson claimed, or if he was simply grateful that she said she could heal his legs.

But Jackson showed no trace of guilt. His smile stayed open and sincere. You’re the first.

Once her hands were clean, he dropped the bloodstained handkerchief to the ground. Then he rolled his wheelchair back a little, putting some space between them so he could look at her properly.

Victoria met his gaze without flinching. Well then, I’m honored.”

The honor’s mine.Jackson’s eyes softened, then flicked toward Simon lying on the floor. He’s your brother. You crippled his leg. How are you going to explain this when you go back?

Victoria shrugged lightly. Still thinking. Maybe I’ll poison him mute and break both his hands. Then he won’t be able to tell

anyone.

Simon’s face instantly filled with panic. Dragging his ruined leg behind him, he started crawling desperately toward the

door.

He had no idea Victoria already knew Jackson.

Jackson watched him struggle across the floor, a faint smile on his lips. That’s not a bad plan. But if you don’t mind, I could take care of him for you.

Victoria waved it off. No need. This is my family matter.

ackson’s voice stayed calm. I’m going to be your fiancé soon. Helping you is only natural.

Victoria laughed softly. You’re smooth. Now I’m really starting to wonder if this is actually your first time treating a woman his well.

As she spoke, she walked over and stepped in front of Simon, blocking his path. She took out another small bottle and orced a pill into his mouth.

Simon coughed violently, trying to spit it out, but it was no use.

The pill had already slid down his throat. A faint sweetness mixed with a medicinal taste spread across his tongue.

What did you give me?Simon’s voice shook. He knew whatever it was, it couldn’t be anything good.
