Chapter 261
After dinner, Victoria didn’t return to the Binder family right away. She stayed behind, her curiosity piqued, watching Jackson and Gerry Thornton play chess with keen interest.
Jackson played with a laid–back elegance, leaning back in his chair. The black chess piece spun between his slender, beautiful fingers, like a mischievous sprite dancing in the air.
His eyes were focused and profound, every move thoughtful yet carrying a casual grace, as if he was both calculating and
carefree at the same time.
Under the glow of the lights, his handsome face looked even more striking–his high nose, deep eyes, and the slight upward curve of his lips. Every feature made Victoria’s heart flutter uncontrollably.
And whenever he set a piece down, Victoria felt her heart quiver, as if each black stone was falling into the lake of her heart,
ending ripples that spread out endlessly.
ust thinking that this outrageously handsome man belonged to her–and that soon she’d be able to get close to him, to ouch him, to have him all to herself–made Victoria’s heart race with a thrill she couldn’t even describe.
The feeling was so sweet it made her blush, and she couldn’t help but bite her lip, worried she might let out a giggle at any
noment.
Lost again,” Gerry said, glancing at the chessboard before slowly dropping the piece in his hand. He looked up at the clock ›n the wall.
After two rounds, it was already almost ten o’clock.
t was getting late.
Gerry turned to Jackson and said, “Alright, it’s getting late. Jackson, why don’t you walk Vickie home?”
ackson nodded. “Sure.”
Then they left the study.
Victoria pushed Jackson’s wheelchair herself, slowly heading downstairs to the door.
When they reached the door, Victoria couldn’t help but say, “Jack, you looked so handsome playing chess just now. I couldn’t ake my eyes off you the whole time.”
As she spoke, her eyes sparkled with admiration and affection.
ackson paused, then smiled. “Really? It’s not often I get to surprise you. Sometimes I wonder, with how amazing you are, Vickie, if you ever think I’m not special enough for you.”
Victoria burst out laughing, shaking her head. “You? Ordinary? No way. Honestly, Jack, just with that face of yours–even if you didn’t have anything else going for you, you’d still stand out from the crowd.”
Jackson grinned. “Vickie, if I ever lost these looks, would you stop liking me then?”
It was one of those killer questions, like the old “If your mom and I both fell in the water, who would you save?“—totally impossible to answer.
Most girls would probably freak out over that, but for Victoria, it was a total breeze.

Victoria didn’t even blink. “Honestly, after what you went through with Cassian, I don’t think anyone but me could ever get the drop on you. So your face is basically invincible. And even if it really did get ruined, I’d make sure you got it back, good
as new.”
She couldn’t bring herself to say something like, “Even if you got disfigured, I’d still love you.” That would just be lying to
herself.
‘Seriously, who actually likes someone whose face is a total mess?‘ She thought.
At that point, she might still admire and respect Jack for his abilities, but she definitely wouldn’t have any romantic feelings for him anymore.
Honestly, love between a man and a woman is mostly about the looks. If the looks are gone, all that talk about loving someone’s soul is just empty words.
Jackson chuckled, poking fun at himself. “Yeah, from now on, nobody’s going to be able to hurt me. And just to keep you happy, I’ll make sure to protect this face of mine.”
‘Well, I guess I’ll just have to make the most of that handsome face while I can,” Victoria grinned, then bent down and planted a playful kiss on Jackson’s cheek.
ackson smiled, a little reluctant to let her go. “I really wish that every time it’s this late, you’d be coming back to our room with me, not heading home alone.”
Victoria straightened up, her eyes shining with anticipation. “It won’t be long. Once your legs recover, we can finally start planning our wedding.”
By the time Victoria returned to Goldenwood Villa, the Binder family’s home, it was almost eleven, and the living room ights were still on.
Her heart warmed at the sight.
Her parents must have been waiting up for her.
Sure enough, before she even reached the door, she heard Daisy’s voice.
‘Alright, Hector, take a look. What do you think of this design?”
Victoria saw Daisy sitting on the couch, handing a tablet to Hector.
Hector put down his magazine, glanced at the tablet, and nodded approvingly. “Looks great. Still has that signature style of yours.”
Daisy’s cheeks turned a little pink. “Good. I just hope Victoria likes it.”
Victoria blurted out, “Mom, what did you make for me?”
She stepped inside, bouncing over with curiosity and edging right up to Daisy.
Daisy quickly snatched the tablet back and hid it behind her back. “Oh, it’s nothing.”
She quickly changed the subject. “So, what did Gerry want to talk to you about tonight?”
Victoria didn’t press her mom for details. After all, if she spoiled the surprise, it wouldn’t be a surprise anymore.
She leaned back comfortably on the couch and said matter–of–factly, “Faye had Simon accuse me of poisoning her right in front of Grandpa.”

accusation?”
Victoria nodded, her expression unreadable. “Yeah.”
Daisy looked frustrated, shaking her head. “Honestly, I just can’t figure out what he’s thinking anymore.”
She paused, letting out a helpless sigh. “After Darell had the West District butler kidnap you, I was really disappointed in their whole family. But Simon… your dad and I practically raised him. We always treated him like he was half our own son.”
“When Simon was little, he’d come over to Goldenwood Villa all the time, just to hang out and keep us company. He always said he’d never let us feel lonely, and that we could treat him just like our own kid.”
Hector agreed, “Yeah, back then Simon was such a good–hearted kid. But as he got older, he started drifting away. Ever since he took over the company three years ago, he stopped coming by altogether.”
Daisy went on, “Your dad and I didn’t really think much of it–we just figured Simon was busy. But the day we went to pick you up and he didn’t even bother to come home, that’s when your dad and I really started to feel disappointed in him.”
Hector added, “We thought that after they found out Angelica had been lying to them, they’d finally realize their mistakes and change. Your mom and I figured if they really understood what they’d done wrong and stopped hurting you, it would be a good thing for you. But who would’ve thought…”
He shook his head with a sigh. “Simon didn’t even bother to fix his mistakes. And now, after everything, he still stabbed you in the back. There’s just no hope for him anymore.”
Victoria said, “Dad, Mom, you two are just too soft, that’s why you keep expecting something from them. I saw through them from the start, so I never expected anything. No expectations, no disappointments.”
Hector sighed, “Turns out you were right, Vickie.”
Daisy didn’t want to talk about it anymore. “Alright, it’s getting late. Vickie, go take a shower and get some rest. Your dad and I are heading to bed too.”
Victoria nodded. “Okay.”
Back in her room, Victoria took a shower, and before going to bed, she told Blackie not to let Faye’s poison act up unless she gave the word.
Just like she’d told Jackson, unless Blackie died, the poison could never really be removed.
The antidote Victoria gave Faye was just a temporary fix–if Faye stayed out of trouble and played it safe, the poison would never flare up again.
But if Faye or Xavier refused to behave, the poison would flare up all over again.
