“Sibley, what are you saying?” Cassian snapped at her in a low voice, putting on a show of anger.

Sibley quickly covered her mouth. “Oh, sorry, Jackson. I didn’t mean anything by it. I’m just worried about your future.

“If the Binder family really calls off the engagement, it’ll be embarrassing for both you and the Thornton family.”

“Sibley!” Cassian warned again, though there was no real force behind it.

She quickly softened, putting on an obedient look. “Alright, alright. I won’t say anything else.”

Cassian let out a helpless sigh and shook his head, as if indulging her. “Jackson, we’ve spoiled her too much. She’s getting more and more out of line.”

He expected Jackson to brush it off like usual. But this time, Jackson still smiled, yet his words turned cold. “You’re right. Ever since I lost the use of my legs, Sibley has gotten bolder.

“She speaks without thinking in front of me now. She even dares to talk about whether I can have children.”

His voice stayed calm, but there was an edge beneath it. “Seems she’s forgotten she’s just an adopted daughter of the Thornton family. It’s time someone taught her some manners.”

Cassian froze for a moment. He hadn’t expected Jackson to say something like that.

Sibley’s expression stiffened, a flicker of anger flashing across her face when he called her an adopted daughter.

“Jackson, I’ll teach her properly later-”

Before Cassian could finish, Jackson said, “No need to wait. Do it now. Ollie.”

His tone was gentle, but the cold in it was unmistakable.

“Yes, sir.” Ollie stepped forward at once. Before Sibley could react, his hand came down hard across her face. The sharp crack echoed.

Sibley screamed and fell to the ground. When she came back to herself, she clutched her burning cheek, staring at Ollie in

shock.

Jackson looked down at her, his smile as gentle as ever. “Sibley, don’t mistake kindness for belonging. Just because you’ve lived well in the Thornton family for a few years doesn’t mean you’re one of us.

“Remember who you are. You’re just a girl Cassian brought back from an orphanage. If I hadn’t agreed to let you stay, you’d still be fighting over scraps back there.”

Cassian’s eyes narrowed slightly, a cold glint passing through them. But the next second, his usual smile returned.

He said lightly, “Jackson, you used to be very fond of Sibley. She was only joking with you. Why get so angry?”

Jackson’s smile didn’t fade. “A joke is only a joke if I find it funny. If I don’t, it’s not a joke.”

He paused, then added calmly, “It’s like the dog I keep. It only barks when I allow it to.”

Sibley’s eyes widened, humiliation and anger burning in them. She glared at Jackson, her whole body trembling. But she didn’t dare say a word.

Cassian glanced at her, then said sternly, “Did you hear him? Don’t joke around in front of Jackson again.”

Sibley still held her face, the pain making it hard to speak. She could only nod.

Jackson’s smile softened again, almost kindly. “Good. Since you know you were wrong, just don’t do it again.”

He raised a hand. Ollie immediately turned the wheelchair and pushed him toward the back courtyard.

As they walked, Ollie couldn’t help speaking up. “Sibley has no sense of gratitude. If you hadn’t taken her in, how could someone like her live this comfortably in the Thornton family?

“And now that Mr. Gerry Thornton is hesitating to name an heir because of your condition, she actually dares to mock you.”

He snorted, “And Mr. Cassian Thornton is no better. Back then, a fortune teller said he would bring bad luck, so Mr. Gerry Thornton insisted on sending him away.

“If you hadn’t begged again and again to bring him back, he’d still be struggling out there. Instead of being grateful, he blames you. And he even tried to kill you for the heir position.”

Jackson’s smile slowly faded. His fingers brushed over the armrest of the wheelchair.

Even now, he couldn’t understand why Cassian hated him so much. He couldn’t believe it was really just for the position of heir.

If he had known from the beginning that Cassian wanted it that badly, he would have given it to Cassian without hesitation.

But now, Cassian had tried to take his life. At that point, there was nothing left to hold on to.

After Jackson left, Sibley’s face twisted with resentment. “Cassian, what right does he have to hit me and say I’m not part of the Thornton family? I’m Dad’s real daughter. When can I finally reveal my identity?”

Cassian pulled his gaze back and gently patted her shoulder. “Sibley, just be patient.”

Sibley turned to him, tears in her eyes. “How could I? Didn’t you hear what he said? He looks down on me.”

Cassian stroked her hair softly. “Just be patient a little longer. Once I take Jackson’s place as heir and deal with him quietly, you’ll be able to return to the Thornton family openly.”

Sibley grabbed his hand tightly, tears streaming down her face. “Then you have to kill him.”

“Of course. I’ll get revenge for you.” He sighed and said, “But we can’t rush it. He already suspects me. It won’t be easy to make another move now, We need to plan carefully.”

Hatred burned in Sibley’s eyes. “He really is hard to kill. We failed last time.”

Cassian nodded. “At least Grandpa hasn’t officially announced the heir yet. That means he’s hesitating. We’ve already achieved half of what we wanted.”

Sibley let out a cold laugh. “He’s already crippled. There’s no way Grandpa would choose a cripple as heir

Confidence filled Cassian’s eyes. “Exactly. Just a little longer. We’ll get through this.”
