“So why didn’t you mention it?” Victoria pressed, looking at him intently. “Did you already know who’s backing the Clark family? Are you hiding something from me?”

Jackson glanced at her with a mix of helplessness and affection. “I didn’t mean to keep it from you. I just didn’t want you to be burdened with my issues.”

“What do you mean?” Victoria asked.

Jackson explained, “Nathan has suffered repeated setbacks at your hands. He would definitely have people investigating your background, confirming whether you still have any backing he cannot afford to provoke, so he can make his next move.”

“And then?” Victoria pressed.

“With your status, he won’t easily find anything about you. Like that night you dealt with Darell, you only let Mara appear because you didn’t mind me knowing your background,” Jackson said.

“Yeah, so?” Victoria replied.

“So, Nathan will think everything you do has the Thornton family’s approval, maybe even our involvement,” Jackson said.

At that point, Victoria finally understood. “Nathan is definitely trying to bring down your family. And to do that, he has to rely on the powerful figure backing the Clark family. So that person will likely start causing trouble for your family soon.”

Jackson nodded. “Yeah, as my fiancée, everything you say and do will inevitably be tied to the Thornton family. But it’s fine. No matter what the Clark family’s backer tries to pull, I’ve got ways to handle it.”

Victoria asked teasingly, “Jackson, do you ever regret getting engaged to someone like me who always stirs up trouble?”

“Who even asks like that?” Victoria said, amused and exasperated.

Jackson grinned. “Seriously, do you think I’d ever regret it?”

He pressed her hand to his chest. “Don’t you know how much you mean to me?”

Victoria smiled lightly. “I believe you’re sincere with me, but people are very good at disguising themselves to

get what they want. And I can trust you only because I can afford the risk of being wrong.”

Without another word, Jackson pulled her into his arms and kissed her, shutting her up.

Victoria could move on, but that did not mean she had not felt pain.

Victoria pulled away from him. “Given everything I’ve been through, I can’t afford to lose my composure.” She paused, giving Jackson a thoughtful look. “Jack, don’t expect me to play the damsel in distress for you.”

With that, she lowered her head and opened the lunchbox. “Alright, let’s eat. I’ll treat you once we’re done.” Noticing the slight change in her expression, Jackson asked, “Are you angry, Victoria?”

Victoria replied, “No.”

“Sorry,” Jackson said, rolling his wheelchair over to sit across from her.

Victoria paused with her fork in hand. “What’s with the apology? I already said I’m not mad.”

Jackson said, “You’re only forcing yourself not to be angry.”

Victoria handed him another fork. “So, are you going to eat or not?”

“Yeah,” Jackson said with a smile, taking the fork and joining her for the meal in silence.

There was not much talking, but Jackson never took his eyes off Victoria the whole time.

Jackson observed Victoria in silence, the way she ate, the small smiles she occasionally revealed, and felt an indescribable warmth in his chest.

When Victoria finished, she set down her fork, wiped her mouth, and looked up, catching Jackson watching

her.

Jackson said softly, “Vickie, whether you believe it or not, I never wanted you to act vulnerable. When I said you’re too rational, it’s just because I don’t want you to shoulder everything alone.

“You’re amazing and strong. Maybe you’ve reached the age where you don’t need anyone to rescue you.

“But I just wish sometimes you could let yourself loosen up a bit, instead of always preparing for the worst, thinking that’ll keep you from getting hurt. But the truth is, you get scared. You get hurt, too.

“You just think you’ve got nowhere to fall back on, so you force yourself to never show weakness, never let anyone see you need anything.”

Victoria wiped her mouth with a wet wipe, then grabbed another and tossed it at Jackson. “Alright, I get it. And you still want to lecture me? You were planning to keep the whole thing about Nathan’s backer from me, too.”

Jackson took the wet wipe off his face, wiped the corner of his mouth, and said, “You’re not angry anymore?”

“If you keep talking, I’ll keep being mad,” Victoria said, opening the first aid kit and shooting him a glare.

Jackson grinned. “Alright, I’ll shut up.”

Victoria retrieved her needle case and started Jackson’s treatment.

As she looked down at Jackson’s knee, a small smile tugged at her lips.

Maybe that was what she liked about Jackson.

He always took the initiative to help her open up, never letting her keep her worries bottled up inside.

Nathan lay quietly in his private hospital room, his face expressionless as he listened to the update.

His once–handsome features were now wrapped in thick bandages, leaving only his eyes visible, with an icy hostility glinting within them.

‘Zachary!‘ Nathan fumed inwardly. ‘He actually dared to betray me!”

Nathan’s anger burned inside him. He never imagined that his minion would actually turn on him.

“Send someone to track him down. I don’t care how long it takes, bring him to me.” Nathan’s voice was ice- cold and utterly emotionless, sending a chill through everyone in the room.

“Yes, Mr. Clark,” the man replied, his voice trembling.

Once Nathan’s subordinate had left, a cheerful voice tinged with concern echoed through the hospital room. “Nathan, how are you holding up?”
