‘Honestly, I’m the real scumbag here. I had the perfect chance to be with her, but I didn’t cherish it. I didn’t trust Victoria at all and even tried to drag her into my mess… I’m so shameless!’ Gavin thought.

Sophie let out a sigh of relief. “Looks like those slaps weren’t for nothing.”

Hearing that, Gavin snapped back to reality, turned to Sophie, and growled, “Sophie Fairbank!”

Sophie shot him a look, totally unfazed. “Why are you shouting?”

Gavin rubbed his face. “I can’t slap you back right now, but just wait. When I’m strong enough, I’ll give you those slaps right back!”

Sophie just shrugged. “Fine, I’ll be waiting for that day.”

He snorted, “Just watch! I’ll become someone worth admiring! One day, Victoria will see me differently!” then turned to stare out the window again.

Even if, by then, he’d already lost Victoria for good. But he refused to let Victoria think of him forever as some loser who never did anything with his life.

Sophie didn’t want Gavin to stay hung up on Victoria. He might say he wouldn’t bother her, but she knew he’d still be thinking about her. Right now, the priority was to show him that other girls could be just as cute.

Actually, Sophie thought Annie was pretty adorable. With that in mind, she pulled out her phone, added Annie on Facebook using the number Annie had called her from, and sent a friend request with a note: [I’m Sophie Fairbank.]

It didn’t take long for Annie to accept the request, and she replied: [?]

Sophie replied: [My dumbass brother went to bother your cousin Jackson today.]

Annie: [!]

Sophie: [Could you let Jackson know I’m sorry? I already set my brother straight, and he promised he won’t go after Victoria anymore. If he tries anything again, I’ll break his legs myself.]

Annie sent a voice message: “Honestly, Sophie, if there’s a next time, Jackson will probably break your brother’s legs himself. For real, you really need to keep an eye on him!”

As soon as he heard Annie’s voice, Gavin whipped around, his jaw clenched. “Sophie, why are you messaging Annie? he snapped.

Sophie ignored him and kept texting: [What do you think of my brother?]

Annie replied almost instantly. It was another voice message. “Idiot Simp!”

Gavin instantly got pissed off the moment he heard Annie’s voice message. ‘Seriously?’ Gavin thought. This nosy chick really has the guts to call me an Idiot Simp?

Unable to hold back, he snatched Sophie’s phone and furiously fired off a voice message, letting Annie have it. “You nosy bitch! No wonder you love meddling and breaking up couples; no guy wants you anyway! Hope you stay single forever!”

Sophie glanced at her dumbass brother, who was still clutching her phone, and let out a silent sigh. She thought Annie was pretty cool, but it all depended on whether Annie would ever go for Gavin.

Whatever, she’d just set him up with some rich heiress when the time came. After ten minutes of Gavin holding her phone and bickering with Annie, Sophie finally stepped in.

“Gavin, if you want to roast someone, use your own phone. Give mine back!”

Gavin scoffed, tossed the phone back to her, then pulled out his own, opened the Facebook account Annie had used to pretend to be Victoria, and kept trash-talking her.

Sophie plugged her ears, and when she finally couldn’t stand it anymore, she told the driver to pull over and booted Gavin out of the car with a swift kick.

“Get it all out and don’t come back until you’re done. You’re seriously annoying me,” she snapped. With that, the automatic door slid shut and the car sped off, leaving Gavin shivering alone in the cold wind.

He got even more pissed, snatched up his phone, and kept firing off insults. “Annie, you busybody! Thanks to you, Sophie booted me out of the car, and now I’m out here freezing in the wind!”

Annie shot back right away: “Honestly, I hope you freeze to death, one less troublemaker in the world!”

Gavin shot back, “Dream on! I’m not going anywhere! I’ll make sure I stick around just to annoy you!”

Annie replied, “With skin as thick as yours, even a blizzard couldn’t take you out! But if I were you, I’d be so embarrassed I’d wish I could disappear!”

Gavin retorted, “If anyone should be dying of embarrassment, it’s you! No shame at all, pretending to be Victoria just to DM me! Admit it, you’re just desperate for my attention, you totally have a crush on me, right?

“You’re the real Idiot Simp here! No matter what you do, I’ll never be into you, so stop pestering me already!”

Annie replied, “If you can actually promise not to bother my cousin’s girlfriend or mess up their relationship, who would ever want to talk to an airhead like you? Seriously, texting you is an absolute nightmare every single time!”

After her afternoon nap, Victoria left the Thornton Group. Jackson stood by the huge glass window, staring outside in deep thought. The winter sunlight poured in, scattering patches of light and shadow across his face.

After a while, once he saw Victoria’s car pull away, Jackson picked up his phone and called Ollie. Ollie answered right away. “Mr. Thornton, what can I do for you?”

Jackson’s voice was calm and gentle. “Help me pick out a cane this afternoon.”

Ollie’s voice suddenly sounded excited. “Wait, your leg’s healed?”

Jackson nodded. “Yeah, I can stand and walk now, but I still can’t go for long. Vickie said it’s mostly rehab from here on out. the treatment’s almost done.”.

Jackson added, “Make it as public as possible, so Felix and Xavier can’t miss it.” That way, those two would really start to feel

the heat.

“Understood, Mr. Thornton!” Ollie replied. After hanging up, he jumped into action, quickly gathering his team and laying out exactly what he wanted, making sure Jackson would get the best cane possible.

As soon as Ollie gave the order, news reached Xavier in no time. Xavier practically shouted, “Wait, Ollie’s buying a cane?”

The person on the other end replied nervously, “Yeah, that’s right.”

“Damn it!” Xavier was fuming. He and his dad were scrambling to deal with their seized shipments, but Jackson was totally untouched; he might even be walking again.

‘So what’s the point of all my hard work? Xavier grumbled inwardly. Am I just busting my ass so Jackson can walk away with everything?’

The more Xavier thought about it, the more pissed he got. He hung up and immediately called Felix, not wasting a second before laying into him.

“My mole inside the Thornton Group says Jackson’s leg is pretty much healed. Ollie’s sending someone out this afternoon to buy the best cane in all of Benwig City,” Xavier said, his voice getting even more agitated.

“Felix, we’re running out of time. If that Gary you keep talking about doesn’t make a move soon, we’re totally screwed for the heir spot!”
