Chapter 418
Chapter 418
Stephen hesitated for a moment, but finally picked up the phone and said softly. “Mr. Thornton.”
Jackson’s gentle voice came through the line. “Is there anything you’re missing lately?”
Stephen glanced around the room, filled with all sorts of valuable things, and gave a wry smile. “I don’t need anything. I haven’t even used most of the stuff you sent over.”
Then, as if something had just occurred to him, he hesitated for a moment before asking in a low voice, ‘Mr. Thornton, were you this generous to that impostor you used to call your brother, too?”
Jackson answered honestly, “To be real with you, I treated him better than I treat you. What you have now is barely a fraction of what I gave him back then. But you’ve always been hesitant to accept more from me, and I don’t want to overwhelm you.”
Stephen was silent for a moment, then asked, “After he betrayed you and left you crippled, that must’ve hurt a lot right? Aren’t you afraid that if you treat me so well, I might stab you in the back one day and hurt you badly, too?
“After all, even though we’re real brothers, we don’t really have any bond. You don’t have to feel like you owe me anything or treat me so well. It wasn’t you who wronged me back then.”
Jackson let out a soft laugh. “I don’t regret treating that fake Cassian so well. Back then, I thought he was my real brother. If you treat your own brother with all your heart, what’s there to regret?”
Hearing Jackson say that, Stephen struggled even more inside, feeling torn and conflicted. Jackson was such a great brother. But he himself wasn’t a good one.
If Gary really went after Gerry for revenge, no matter if he succeeded or not, Jackson would definitely be implicated. Jackson cared so much about him, treated him so well, and yet he was the one who would end up dragging Jackson down with him
“Is there anything else you wanted to talk about?” Stephen couldn’t bring himself to face Jackson, so he asked quickly.
“Nope, that’s it. If you need anything, just call me,” Jackson replied.
“Well, I need to get back to working on the script,” Stephen said, and hung up before Jackson could say anything else. After hanging up, he dropped his phone and leaned back against the headboard, feeling helpless.
Whether it was Jackson or Victoria, both of them had gone out of their way to help Gary and me. But now, Gary and I were about to stab them in the back. Stephen thought bitterly. ‘No matter the reason, in the end. I’m really no better than that fake brother Jackson had back then.
After hanging up with Stephen, Jackson saw a message from Annie.
Annie: [Oh no! I heard from Sophie that Gavin went to your company and made a scene today! It’s all my fault! I should’ve kept a closer eye on him!]
Jackson replied: It’s not your fault, don’t worry about it. Gavin won’t be bothering Vickie anymore. Honestly. I should be thanking you for all the help you’ve given me lately.]
Annie: [Hey, Jackson! No need to thank me. I’m just here to ride your coattails!]
Annie: I spent the whole day roasting Gavin for you! Don’t worry, if he dares to bother Victoria again. I compile all his dirty laundry and post it on my social media! Fill make sure he gets totally canceled!)

Chapter 418
Jackson: [You really don’t need to bother with Gavin just because you’re helping Vickie and me. Don’t let him waste your time.]
Annie: [No worries! I don’t have any work right now, so I’ve got tons of free time. It’s not a waste, he’s just my entertainment!]
Jackson: [Whatever makes you happy.]
After replying, he hit Victoria up with a video call like he always did. She picked up right away, her hair loose and still dripping from her shower.
She was leaning back against the headboard, the warm yellow light casting a gentle glow on her face. Greenie was hanging out on her shoulder, its long body looped around her collarbone, those bright green scales glistening in the lamplight.
“Hey, Greenie,” Jackson’s voice came through the speaker, clearly amused.
Greenie lifted its head, flicked its tongue, and stared at Victoria’s phone screen for a couple of seconds with those beady eyes. Then, acting all high and mighty, it turned away and slowly slid off Victoria’s shoulder, making its way over to Whitey at the other end of the bed.
Whitey was curled up, dozing off, when Greenie poked it awake with the tip of its tail. Whitey lifted its head, glaring at Greenie in annoyance.
Jackson chuckled, his long fingers tapping lightly on the desk without thinking. “Looks like Greenie still isn’t a fan of me.”
Victoria adjusted her phone so the camera could catch Greenie and Whitey, then reached out and poked Greenie on the head. “Greenie’s just a bit aloof.”
Suddenly, she remembered something and turned to look behind her. “Where’s Blackie?”
As soon as she finished speaking, a small, pitch-black snake poked its head out from under the covers, its golden, slit- pupiled eyes staring straight at the phone screen.
Unlike the other two snakes, Blackie seemed to really like Jackson. It slowly slithered over to the phone and gently rubbed its head against the screen.
“Looks like Blackie likes you,” Victoria said with a smile, reaching out to pet Blackie’s head. Blackie took the chance to wrap itself around her wrist, looking just like a delicate black bracelet.
Jackson watched the three snakes on the screen, each with their distinct personality, and his gaze softened. “Do they fight a
lot?”
“All the time. Greenie’s always the troublemaker, and Blackie’s the aloof one,” Victoria said with a helpless smile, glancing at Greenie and Whitey, who were already scrapping.
“See? Greenie’s already gone and taken over Whitey’s nest again. Those two are probably going to be at it all night.”
Seeing this, Blackie slid off her wrist and slithered over to break up the fight, Jackson chuckled, watching the chaos on the screen. “With them around, you never really felt alone, did you?”
“Yeah,” Victoria said with a gentle smile, her eyes soft as she looked at the three little ones. Then she looked up at Jackson on the screen. “With the way things were in your family, your mom wasn’t around, your brother was sent away, you must’ve fel pretty alone, huh?”
Jackson paused for a second, then said, “I always had one thing on my mind: getting my brother back home. I guess I never really had the time to feel lonely.”

Victoria thought. That’s exactly why I fell for him. She said seriously, “Jack, you won’t be lonely anymore. With these three as your wedding companions, I guarantee your life will be lively and full of fun.”
Victoria’s words sent a storm of emotions through Jackson’s usually calm eyes. It had been less than three months since he met Victoria, but his whole world had changed completely.
Just like Victoria said, his days ahead would be anything but lonely. Ever since Victoria agreed to marry him, Jackson had been looking forward to their wedding every single day.
That longing reached its absolute peak today, now that he could finally stand and walk again. He dreamed, night and day, of standing tall with dignity and giving Victoria a wedding so grand it would be remembered for a century.
“Alright, you just started walking again today, so get some rest. We’ve got our first real date tomorrow, and trust me, you’ll be worn out!” Victoria teased.
Jackson laughed. “How could I ever get tired hanging out with you? I could go all day and never get tired, not even for a second.”
Victoria felt her heart melt. “Your sweet talk is getting smoother and smoother. Alright, goodnight, Jack.”
“Goodnight, Vickie.”
