The butler answered honestly, “No idea, Xavier. She grabbed her bag and headed out not long after you got back.”

Xavier felt something was off and said, “Bring me my phone.”

The butler handed him the phone, and Xavier took it, dialing Faye’s number.

The phone rang for quite a while before she finally answered.

Xavier demanded, “Faye, something huge just happened. Why aren’t you at home?”

Faye sounded anxious. “Xavier, I’m sorry. I can’t go to Afriska with you. I have to stay in Benwig City. So I need to lay low for a while.”

“Lay low? How are you supposed to hide from Jackson if he’s looking for you?” Xavier said, exasperated.

Faye replied, “Relax. I’ve got someone helping me out.”

Xavier frowned, his voice tight with worry. “Someone helping you? Don’t tell me it’s one of those losers who used to chase after you but never had the guts. Please don’t tell me you’re lowering yourself to be with a guy like that!”

Faye let out a sharp cry, like she’d just been slapped. Then there was a sudden rustling sound, and a rough male voice came through the phone.

“Xavier, back when you were on top, maybe you could look down on people. But now you’re getting shipped off to Afriska for good, never to return.

“Who are you still trying to act superior to? Let me tell you, Faye’s got no choice but to cling to me now!” With that, the call was cut off.

Xavier’s face turned grim. ‘Faye, you idiot!‘

Even if Afriska was a mess, it was still better than being crushed and humiliated back home. At least there, it was their turf.

But now, Faye was actually going to throw herself at a guy she used to look down on.

‘Whatever happens to her, she’s got no one to blame but herself, he thought.

Everyone agreed.

Helen just stayed quiet.

When she and her husband first started their business, it was Gerry who gave them the seed money. Now that their business was thriving, all she wanted was that her daughter would have a smooth and peaceful life.

After the meeting, Nancy, who was usually quiet and reserved, lingered behind as the last to leave.

Jackson picked up on it and asked, “Aunt Nancy, is there something you want to talk to me about?”

“I heard you’re trying to take down Steven. Is that true?” She didn’t beat around the bush.

Jackson shot back, “Is Uncle thinking about helping me out?”

Nancy knew Jackson was sharp, so she got straight to the point. “A major directive just came down, calling for a sweeping reform. If your uncle can seize this opportunity and deliver some real results, his position could definitely move up another rung.”

Jackson had already guessed that his uncle would use this opportunity to push his political career even further.

He grinned and said, “Understood, Aunt. We’ll focus on gathering solid evidence against Steven. As for actually bringing him down, that’s all up to Uncle.”

Nancy knew Jackson was clever and capable, so there was no need for extra words. She simply said, “Congratulations on becoming the heir,” and left.

At dinner, Gerry reminded him, “Jackson, now that the heir is settled, it’s time to start thinking about your wedding with Vickie.”

Jackson smiled. “Yeah, I was planning to kick off the wedding preparations once my legs were fully healed and I officially became the heir. But right now, taking care of Steven comes first.”

When Stephen heard Steven’s name, he frowned, like he was digging up some bad memories. “Jackson, who’s Steven?”

Jackson explained, “Steven Mosley, the guy backing the Clark family.”

Stephen nodded. “Oh, you mean that bigwig Ashley and Brian spilled the beans about?”

Jackson answered casually, “Yeah.”

“Why does Steven’s name ring a bell? I swear I’ve heard it before,” Stephen said.

Jackson and Gerry both looked at him. “Are you sure you’ve actually met him?”

Steven hardly ever showed up in public, and there weren’t many photos of him online.

Stephen thought for a moment. “Maybe I got it wrong. The guy I remember was called Seth Mosley. When I was a kid, I used to help Gary set up his stall, and this man Steven would show up with his crew to collect protection money.”

Jackson’s expression darkened. He’d already dug into it. Steven was an only child, no brothers whatsoever.

Jackson didn’t say much. “Yeah, Stephen, just play your part. Don’t worry about this.”

Stephen grunted in agreement and stayed quiet.

Later that night, while video chatting, Jackson filled Vickie in on what Stephen had said.

Vickie perked up, clearly interested. “Steven and Seth? Those names are almost identical. I’ll have Mara dig into it. Who knows, maybe there’s something linking them.”

Jackson nodded. “So, what’s going on in the village? Have those death row inmates made any moves?”

Vickie replied, “They haven’t done anything. Simon told me they’re just hanging around, acting like they’re on vacation.”

Jackson thought for a moment. “Then maybe those death row inmates are just a smokescreen, meant to distract us.”

Vickie caught on right away. “I’ll have Mara remind the team not to get too hung up on those inmates.”

Sure enough, once Vickie started connecting the dots, she quickly figured out what Steven was really up to.

“Steven actually plans to blow up Mullinran Village, and those death row inmates are just the cover he’s using to make it look justified!” she said.

With only three days left before the New Year, Vickie shared Mara’s investigation results with Jackson during
