Jackson’s smile disappeared when he heard Victoria’s words, his voice unusually cold. “Blow the whole village? He really thinks he’s untouchable.”

He added, “I’ve dug up some info on Steven and his brother. Turns out Steven really did have an identical twin, but for some reason, Seth was taken away as a child. That guy grew up to be a small–time gangster.

“Like my brother mentioned, back in those days, he was always running with all kinds of lowlifes and hustlers, shaking down regular folks for protection money.

“But then, Seth just vanished, like he dropped off the face of the earth. After that, Steven went abroad for a while to recover from an illness. When he came back, people said his personality had changed a bit.”

Victoria put forward her own theory. “So, you’re saying the real Steven actually died from illness ages ago, and the whole ‘going abroad‘ thing was just a smokescreen to fool everyone, so his brother could impersonate him?”

Jackson nodded slightly in agreement. “Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m thinking. But right now, I don’t have any concrete evidence to prove it.”

Victoria, however, remained calm and reassured him, “It’s fine. Now that we’ve got a lead, it’ll be much easier to dig deeper.”

Jackson agreed and pressed, “So, when do you think Steven will make his move?”

Victoria paused to think, then analyzed, “From what we know, Steven’s plans are probably almost set. With how crazy he is, I think blowing up the village on New Year’s Eve would be even more thrilling for him.”

Jackson nodded in agreement. “That’s exactly what I was thinking. When everyone’s caught up in the New Year’s Eve fireworks and celebrations, the explosion would be less noticeable and easier to overlook.”

Victoria’s lips curled into a cold, mocking smile. “Heh, if word gets out that Steven, the police chief, gets busted on New Year’s Day, that’ll blow up the news just as much.”

She added, “Oh, and Nathan’s sentence is set. He’s getting life in prison for all his crimes.”

Jackson said, “Not the death penalty… but that’s what I expected.”

Victoria shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. The law might not make Nathan pay with his life, but I’ll have people inside make sure he pays for every innocent life he ruined. Making him wish he was dead is far more satisfying than a quick death.”

Jackson said, “Vickie, once we take care of Steven, it’s time to start planning our wedding.”

At the mention of their wedding, Victoria’s face lit up with a dazzling smile. “Yeah, your leg’s all healed up now. We should finally start planning our big day.”

Jackson said, “We’re thinking about five days after the New Year. What do you think? Grandpa had someone pick up that lucky date.”

Victoria glanced at the calendar, they’d have two months to get everything sorted.

It was plenty of time, so she grinned. “Awesome! Let’s go with that date for our wedding!”

Two days before New Year’s Eve, Victoria got a call from Stephan.

Stephan grumbled, “Victoria, you sent your aunt Sirena and her son Nathan to the village, and they’re making a real mess. Those two are fighting non–stop every day!”

Victoria snorted with laughter. “Just let them go at it. As long as they don’t wreck the herbs you’re growing, it’s all good.”

After his rant, Stephan asked in a nostalgic tone, “Victoria, are you coming back for New Year’s?”

Actually, he wasn’t holding out much hope. He knew Victoria was really busy in Benwig City.

But to his surprise, Victoria replied right away, “Yeah, I’m already getting ready to head back to the village.”

“What?! You’re already here?” Stephan’s voice was full of disbelief. “If you’re coming back to the village, why didn’t you let me know earlier?”

Victoria laughed. “I wanted to give you a surprise. See? Aren’t you feeling surprised now?”

“Well, that’s definitely a surprise,” Stephan admitted. “Are you coming back alone, or is your handsome fiancé joining you?

“Well, just drive safe. We’ll have food ready and wait for you to get back!”

After another half–hour drive, Victoria finally made it back to Mullinran Village.

After hearing Victoria was coming back, Calvin and Simon were already waiting at the entrance to the village.

When they spotted Victoria’s car, their faces instantly lit up with smiles.

Calvin beamed. “Victoria, as soon as Stephan told me you are coming back, I get so excited I rushed right over to wait for you.”

Victoria opened the car door and let them in. “So, Grandpa, you’ve been waiting here for half an hour?”

“You bet! I just wanted to be the first to see you,” Calvin said with a big smile.

Simon sat quietly next to 001, who was there to protect Victoria. He honestly had no idea what to say to her, so he just kept quiet and listened.

“So, you came back here just to spend New Year’s with me, your old grandpa?” Calvin asked.

Victoria definitely couldn’t admit she was here to bust Steven’s plot, so she just flashed a bright smile and said, “Of course! I’m here to celebrate it with you and all family too!”

Calvin grinned from ear to ear at her words.

When they got to Victoria’s old house in the village, she parked and helped Calvin out of the car, then walked him inside.

001 came in right behind them. Simon lingered at the doorway, unsure if he should step inside.

After Victoria went in, she turned and saw Simon still hanging back. She said casually, “Come in and take a seat.”

Simon couldn’t hide his excitement and quickly walked in.

Before long, the whole village started pouring into Victoria’s house, everyone fussing over her and asking how she was doing. The place was so packed, it was almost bursting at the seams.

“Victoria, you’re back! Wow, your skin’s glowing!” someone said.

“Yeah, not just that. You’ve put on a bit of weight too! You look so much healthier!” someone else added.

“That’s good, that’s good! Looking good, girl! You look even better now!” another person chimed in.

Then, a woman asked, “How long are you staying this time? A week? Two weeks?”

Victoria shrugged. “We’ll see.”

“What do you mean ‘we’ll see‘? Just stay for a whole month! We’ve all missed you so much!” she replied.

“Yeah, it’s not easy for you to come back, so just stay a bit longer!” Another woman patted Victoria’s back.

Stephan hurried over and spoke up for Victoria. “Hey, she’s super busy in Benwig City. She can’t just hang out here all day. Come on, give her a break and let her grab a bite first.”

“Yeah, yeah, let Victoria eat! She must be starving after that long drive,” a man finally said.

After they left, Stephan and Yorine brought over the dishes they’d just made. “Victoria, we made all your favorite country–style dishes!”

Simon stood up, looking a bit awkward. “Vickie, Grandpa, you two go ahead and eat. I’ll get going.”

But Victoria stopped him. “Simon, stay and eat with us. I need to ask you a few things later.”

Simon’s face lit up with joy again, a smile he couldn’t hold back as he took a seat on the wooden stool by the table.

After dinner, Victoria got straight to the point. “Grandpa, Stephan, Yorine, something big is about to go down in Mullinran Village tomorrow night at New Year’s Eve.”
