Gerry snapped out of it and closed the wooden box. “How could I possibly accept such an expensive gift from a junior like you?”

Victoria smiled. “Don’t worry about it. I’m not hurting for cash.”

‘Not hurting for cash?!‘ Gerry was shocked again.

Seeing Gerry’s reaction, Simon couldn’t help but ask, “Mr. Thornton, are these herbs really worth that much?”

Gerry shot Simon a look of disdain. “Of course. These herbs are extremely rare. My grandson Jackson spent 30 million dollars at an auction just to get his hands on them!

“And now Victoria just hands them over like it’s nothing! Never mind where she got the money. Just the fact that she managed to get her hands on something this rare is already impressive!”

At Gerry’s words, Simon’s expression shifted a dozen times. He realized Victoria hadn’t lied to him. These herbs really were worth a fortune.

Staring at the wooden box in Gerry’s hands, Darell couldn’t help but feel even more suspicious of his daughter.

“Alright, that’s all for now. Feel free to drop by the Thornton family whenever you have time,” Gerry said, stowing the box away.

Victoria nodded. “Sure.”

She glanced at Jackson.

Jackson met her gaze and gave his phone a little wave. “We’ll talk later.”

Victoria blinked and flashed him an OK sign.

After seeing the Thornton family off, Darell glanced at his wife, Julia, and said softly, “Julia, I need to talk to Simon about something. There’s a lot going on here, so stay and help Hector and Daisy out.”

Julia instantly got what Darell was hinting at. He wanted to fix things with Victoria.

After tonight’s welcome dinner, Julia was thinking the same thing. ‘Victoria is so impressive. How could I just hand her over to Hector and Daisy?‘

Whatever it took, Julia was determined to get Victoria back.

“Okay.” Julia nodded in agreement.

Darell turned to his eldest son. “Simon, come with me. I need to talk to you.”

He then glanced at his second son, Curtis, and Angelica. “Curtis, you and your sister head back first.

Victoria crossed her arms and reminded him, “Uncle Darell, don’t forget to give Curtis a proper punishment for trying to make me look bad at the welcome dinner. Or else, I’ll have to tell Grandpa on you.”

After saying that, she chuckled softly and walked away.

Seeing Victoria turn and head toward Daisy and Hector, who were seeing the guests off, Julia caught Darell’s look and hurried after her.

Angelica watched Julia rush after Victoria, and she could tell right away what Julia was planning. Her eyes showed a mix of disappointment and resentment.

‘Are they already regretting choosing me as their adopted daughter?‘ Angelica thought. ‘Regret all you want. It’s too late now! No way I’m letting them make up with Victoria!‘

“Victoria.”

Victoria had barely walked a few steps when she heard Gavin call her name. She stopped and turned to her right.

Gavin had waited until the Thornton family left before finally getting a chance to talk to Victoria.

Preston couldn’t talk his son out of wanting to speak to Victoria before they left, so he went to handle things with Hector and Daisy instead.

But he warned Gavin, “You can talk to her, but don’t cause any trouble. No matter how powerful the Fairbank family is in Benwig City, we can’t afford to cross the Binder or Thornton families!”

Gavin walked over, his eyes full of resentment. “I can’t believe you broke up with me and now you’re already engaged to Jackson. So you’re not as noble as you pretend.

“You’ve always looked down on me, haven’t you? The moment you found someone better, you’d just dump me and move on to the next guy, right?”

Victoria thought, ‘So that was how he saw me–just some gold–digger after Jackson’s money.

Victoria looked at him, at a loss for words. “Gavin, if that’s what makes you feel better, then go ahead and believe it. Is that enough for you?”

Seeing that she didn’t even care, even after he’d called her out, Gavin couldn’t help but say, “If it’s just about the money, you don’t have to marry Jackson.

“I’ve got money too, and I can give you whatever you want. Plus, I’m not some cripple like Jackson. Isn’t that

better?”

Victoria fixed him with a serious look. “Gavin, do you even realize what your biggest problem is?”

Seeing Gavin’s confused expression, Victoria went on, “You always assume the worst about me.

“Yeah, I admit I’m not exactly the warmest person. Maybe I wasn’t all that affectionate during our two months together, but is this really the first time you’re noticing?

“We’ve known each other for two years, so now you can’t stand me? What, were you just a glutton for punishment those first two years, always chasing after me?

“If you really want me to care more about you, then try making yourself more noticeable. Don’t expect me to slow down, pity you, or coddle you just to keep you around.”

Victoria’s words made Gavin go completely pale.

Julia, standing behind Victoria, overheard everything between her and Gavin.

‘So Gavin has a thing for my daughter too?‘ Julia thought. ‘I never expected my own daughter to be so popular!‘

Victoria didn’t bother wasting any more breath on him. “My welcome dinner’s done. If you don’t have anything else to say, just head back with your dad and enjoy your life as the privileged young master of the Fairbank family.

“Like you said, with your status, finding a well–matched heiress to marry is easy. Go ahead and pick someone who’s clingy, always all over you, and can’t take her eyes off you.”

With that, she looked away and walked toward her new mom Daisy and new dad Hector.

“Victoria, you’re the only one I want!” Gavin’s voice rang out from behind her.

Victoria kept walking, not looking back.

Julia could see that Gerry and Jackson weren’t exactly fond of their family anymore. Marrying Victoria to Jackson might not bring much advantage after all.

Honestly, it might be smarter to keep Gavin from the Fairbank family in reserve as a backup option.

‘If things really work out, I’ll be the one who did Gavin a favor. He’d owe me for sure!‘ Julia thought to herself.

Just as Daisy finished dealing with Preston, she spotted Julia trying to cozy up to Victoria and nudged her husband, Hector.

Hector saw it too.

“I seriously don’t know what to say. How does Julia even have the nerve to try and get close to Victoria after everything she’s done to her?” Daisy fumed.

Hector tried to comfort her. “The damage is already done. Nothing they do now will change anything.”

As Victoria approached, Daisy stepped in, cutting Julia off from her. She said sharply, “Julia, the welcome dinner’s over. Why aren’t you heading back with Darell and the others? What are you still doing here?”

Julia acted all innocent. “Oh, Daisy, what are you talking about? This is my daughter’s welcome dinner. Now that it’s finished, how could I just leave you and Hector to handle everything on your own? Of course I should stay and help out.”
