Jackson glanced at Sibley, his smile hovering between amusement and sarcasm. “Sib, if you’re waiting for me to embarrass myself, thinking I’m about to marry some nobody, you’re going to be seriously let down.”
Sibley shook her head fast. “Jackson, you’ve totally misunderstood me. I’d love for Victoria to be smart and gorgeous–way better than Angelica, honestly! But let’s face it. That’s just wishful thinking.
“If she were really all that, Darell wouldn’t have her step in for Angelica in this marriage deal with Besides, you’re not exactly the same guy you used to be, so I’m not about to kid myself.”
you.
As she finished, the corners of her mouth kept twitching upward. She could barely keep from bursting out laughing.
‘Man, roasting Jackson feels so damn good, Sibley thought.
Jackson kept his cool as he replied, “If you really want to know what the Binder family’s real heiress is like, why don’t you just ask Cassian? Why bother with me?
“Or is it that now Ollie’s not around, you think you can get away with saying anything without anyone calling you out?”
Sibley scooted a bit behind Kane, looking all innocent. “Jackson, I’m only asking because I care about you. I just wanted to hear your honest opinion about the Binder family’s real heiress. Why do you always have to freak me out?
“Besides, if you and Grandpa hadn’t decided to leave me out of the welcome party, I wouldn’t be so clueless about everything.”
Her tone was full of complaint as she grabbed Cassian’s arm and shook it eagerly. “Cassian, Jackson won’t tell me anything.
“Come on, what really happened at the welcome party tonight? Is the Binder family’s real heiress not even worth mentioning?”
Cassian shook his head. “Actually, she’s the real deal. She totally stole the spotlight from Angelica.”
Sibley’s eyes went wide. “What? Seriously? She was just brought back from the countryside. How could she possibly outshine Angelica?”
Cassian shrugged. “Yeah, nobody saw that coming. Turns out the girl from the village has been hiding her talents all along. Her name’s probably going to be all over Benwig City’s elite circles soon.”
“So Jackson just scored a total bargain, huh?” Sibley blurted out, then quickly slapped a hand over her mouth and shot Jackson a nervous look. “Don’t get me wrong, Jackson!”
‘Yeah, as if I didn’t mean it,‘ Sibley thought. ‘Of course that’s exactly what I meant!‘
Jackson let out a low chuckle. “Guess it’s lucky you didn’t show up. Otherwise, you might’ve ended up relating to Angelica. Two adopted daughters, and neither of you knows your place.”

Every time Jackson threw that ‘adopted daughter‘ label at her, Sibley felt her blood boiling. She was this close to blurting out the truth that she wasn’t adopted at all. She was Kane’s real daughter.
Kane, who’d been silent all this time, finally let out a helpless sigh. “Alright, Jackson, quit calling Sibley the ‘adopted daughter‘ already. You were the one who begged your grandpa to let her stay, and you doted on her like a real sister for three years.
“Why are you taking out your frustration on her now, just because of your legs?”
Jackson’s smile turned icy. “Wow, Dad, you really do have a soft spot for her. When Sibley mouths off, you don’t say a word, but the second I call her out, you jump down my throat.
“Anyone listening would think Sibley’s your real daughter and I’m just the adopted one in the Thornton family.”
Kane sighed, feigning concern. “Jackson, I know you’ve been feeling low ever since your legs got injured. Don’t let your mind wander too much. The psychologist I arranged will be here tomorrow. He’ll help you sort things out every day.”
But in truth, this so–called psychologist was really there to keep an eye on Jackson, monitoring his every
move.
And more than that, he’d be constantly feeding Jackson psychological suggestions, trying to make him accept his situation and stop fighting to hold onto his old sense of importance.
Sibley grinned, clearly enjoying herself. “Look, Jackson, Dad’s treating you like royalty. He even got you a nationally renowned psychologist. And you still say he favors me? Who’s the favorite now, huh?”
Cassian’s eyes grew serious. “Alright, Sibley, let Jackson head back and get some rest. Things have changed. He’s a patient now, needs plenty of rest.”
Sibley stuck out her tongue. “Okay, I’ll do as you say! I won’t bug Jackson anymore. He should go rest up and take care of his legs!”
Then, pretending to be concerned, she added, “Sure, resting won’t magically fix your legs, Jackson, but at least when you’re asleep, you won’t dwell on it. That’s got to help your mind, right?”
Just like Jackson said, with Ollie gone, if he wanted to teach her a lesson, he was totally on his own. No backup
at all.
‘Seriously, what’s he gonna do, wheel himself over and try to smack me?‘ Sibley thought. ‘Hmph, I can’t get revenge directly, but I can still mock him a bit.
She made sure to bring up every painful topic, rubbing salt in Jackson’s wounds every chance she got.
‘So what can Jackson possibly do to me now?‘ Sibley thought.
Cassian gave Sibley a resigned look and shook his head.
Sibley stuck her tongue out at him, her expression full of defiance. She wasn’t about to give in.

Chapter 59
Jackson noticed every bit of Sibley and Cassian’s blatant little exchange.
And this time, Kane couldn’t even be bothered to fake a scolding for Sibley.

‘Well, isn’t that something,‘ Jackson thought, his eyes turning icy. “They’re starting to push my boundaries, seeing just how much I’ll tolerate.
Jackson gave Kane a serious stare. “So, Dad, are you just letting Sibley say whatever she wants to mock me?”
Kane frowned. “Mocking? What mocking? Sibley was just worried about your mental health. Every word was for your own good. Come on, Jackson, don’t overthink it. Go get some rest.”
Sibley flashed Jackson a triumphant grin, her expression screaming, ‘What are you gonna do about it?‘
“I
get it,” Jackson said with a faint smile, turning his wheelchair toward the window and the darkness outside. “Grandpa, you heard everything just now. Looks like Sibley won’t be staying in the Thornton family anymore.”
As soon as he finished, the three people in the room went pale.
‘Grandpa was out there listening?!‘ Sibley thought.
After Kane and his sons had dropped Grandpa off at his place, they’d come back here. ‘How did he suddenly show up again?‘ Sibley wondered.
Gerry made his way to the doorway, his eyes cutting across the room, sizing up everyone inside.
“If I hadn’t heard it myself, I never would’ve believed an adopted daughter could talk so recklessly and act so brazenly right under our roof,” he said.
Sibley was about to speak up, but Cassian hurriedly grabbed her wrist and gave it a warning squeeze.
That made her clamp her mouth shut.
Kane looked uncomfortable. “Dad, it’s just that Jackson used to spoil Sibley too much, and I guess I ended up letting her get away with too much. I promise I’ll make sure to keep her in line from now on!”
Gerry’s expression grew cold. “Kane, do you really think I’m so old and sick you can pull the wool over my eyes? An adopted daughter actually dares to trample all over my favorite grandson! Is this really how you treat your own son, Jackson?”
