Gerry, who had been quiet all this time, finally spoke up. “You dare talk about being insulted? Have you forgotten that all your years of living large and throwing money around were thanks to Jackson’s hustle in the business world?”

Kane felt his chest tighten, words stuck in his throat.

It was the truth, but damn, it hurt to hear.

“Alright, Dad, that’s all I wanted to say. I’m heading back to my room to rest. Gotta get this leg healed up, just like you said,” Jackson said, then turned to the elder. “Grandpa, I won’t see you out.”

Gerry waved him off. “Go on.”

After Jackson walked out, Gerry’s face changed in a flash. He locked his eyes on his youngest son, Kane.

“Tell me the truth! Is Sibley really your bastard daughter?” Gerry snapped.

Kane shot back, “Dad, why are you buying into Jackson’s crap?”

Gerry kept his face stone cold and snorted. “You’d better pray it’s just crap. If Sibley really is your bastard, Jackson will tear you apart. If you weren’t my own flesh and blood, I wouldn’t even waste my breath warning you, no matter how useless you are.”

With that, he spun around and stormed out.

Kane watched his father’s back, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles turned white.

‘Great, every single one of them thinks I’m beneath them now, Kane seethed. ‘Someday, I’ll make them eat every insult they’ve thrown at me–times a hundred.’

Back in his room, Jackson pulled out his phone. The moment he saw Victoria’s message, the coldness in his eyes melted away, replaced by a gentle warmth.

He smiled softly at the simple greeting on the screen and replied: [Yeah, I’m home. Just finished dealing with some annoying family drama.]

[Feeling a bit tired and a bit down. I want some comfort from my future wife.]

Victoria giggled at Jackson’s message and sent a bunch of kiss emojis his way.

He texted back: [I want a real kiss.]

Victoria hadn’t expected Jackson to be so openly flirty.

Jackson said: [Do you really think being subtle would get me a real kiss from you?]

Victoria teased: [Why don’t we ditch our usual spot tomorrow and just book a presidential suite?]

Jackson said: [No need for that. The pavilion has so much more vibe. Getting a hotel room would make it look like we’re not serious about each other.]

Victoria cracked up at his reply.

Victoria said: [You’re so direct! Aren’t you afraid you’ll mess up how I see you?]

Jackson said: [Aren’t you just into my looks? As long as my face is still good–looking, who needs an image anyway?]

Victoria suddenly realized that when it came to being thick–skinned, she was no match for Jackson.

Victoria said: [Alright, it’s getting late. Go shower and get some rest. As for that kiss, if you remember tomorrow, you’ll get it.]

Jackson shot over a screenshot in no time. He’d set alarms for every half hour, each one tagged: “Kiss from Victoria.”

Victoria sent an emoji: [Need a word to hype up my clever little fox.]

Jackson said: [Get some rest. See you tomorrow.]

Victoria said: [See you tomorrow.]

Victoria lifted her eyes from her phone and found herself staring into three sets of vertical eyes, all seemingly appraising her.

“What are you three up to?” she asked.

The three little snakes exchanged glances, then Greenie and Whitey twined their tails together to make a heart shape.

Victoria blinked, at a loss for words.

‘Are they trying to hint at something… spicy?‘ she thought.

She sat up straight, hands on her hips. “Alright, so now you three know how to mess with me, huh?”

Greenie bolted out of there in a flash.

Whitey and Blackie scampered after him, not wasting a second.

Victoria shook her head, a helpless smile on her lips.

By the time Cassian got Sibley settled in, it was almost one in the morning. When he got back, he found his. father, Kane, still waiting for him in the living room.

“How’s Sibley?” Kane asked, rubbing his temples, exhaustion written all over his face.

Cassian’s face was grim. “She’s really not doing well–been crying nonstop. She’s outside by herself right now, so I had some bodyguards stick close, just to be safe.”

Kane let out a sigh. “Yeah, for now, she’ll just have to put up with some hardship out there. Once we’ve got everything under our control, we’ll bring her back.”

Cassian walked up behind Kane, moved his hands away, and started massaging his temples himself. “Who would’ve thought Jackson could be that cold? Three years with Sibley, and he just walked away like it was nothing.”

Kane’s eyes turned icy as he let out a cold snort. “Yeah, he’s always acted so mild–mannered. I really did underestimate just how ruthless my son could be.”

Cassian asked, “Dad, do you think Jackson really figured something out?”

Kane thought back to Jackson questioning whether Sibley was his biological daughter, and he felt the same way. “Yeah, he probably suspects Sibley is actually mine.”

Talking about it, Kane actually felt a bit relieved. “Honestly, let him keep guessing. That way, he’ll keep his eyes on Sibley and not you. Your secret is the one thing that can never get out.”

“Got it, Dad. I’ll make sure to be extra cautious around Jackson from now on,” Cassian said, worry etched in his voice. “But that actual Binder daughter isn’t the clueless pushover we thought she was.

“The Binder family really spoils her. If she ends up marrying Jackson, that’s going to throw a wrench in our plans to bring him down. Should I try to mess up their engagement somehow?”

Kane shook his head. “Think about it, there are folks way more anxious than us right now. Darell and his crew must be regretting not recognizing their real daughter sooner.

“They’re bound to try every trick in the book to get her back, otherwise they’re just giving away the Binder family fortune for free.”

Cassian frowned, clearly puzzled.

Kane explained, “If they can’t bring Victoria back into the family, then Darell and his crew won’t get a single benefit from her marriage to Jackson.

“Worse yet, they’ll have to hand over the Binder fortune they thought was theirs to Angelica and her husband. Do you really think Darell’s just going to sit back and let Victoria get everything she wants?”

Cassian’s eyes lit up in understanding. “So we don’t need to worry about Victoria helping Jackson out. Darell will make sure she’s out of the picture for us.”

“Right. Your top priority is to win over Gerry. Spend time with him, play chess, and earn his trust. Once he sees you as the rightful successor, taking Jackson’s spot as the Thornton heir is just a matter of time,” Kane

The next day, Victoria was up early. She was about to head downstairs for breakfast when she heard some commotion outside the door.

“Daisy, we’re family! Why are you acting like we’re criminals? That’s just not right. If Grandpa sees this, he’ll be upset. Family should stick together, you know!”

Just then, Zoe, the nanny, came out of the kitchen with breakfast. She explained to Victoria, “Miss Binder, you’re up. Mrs. Binder brought Curtis and Angelica over. They said they’re here to apologize to you.”
