The receptionist was startled by Ollie’s expression and words. She glanced at Jackson, noticing his wheelchair and the fact that he couldn’t walk, and suddenly remembered all the rumors swirling around Cassian lately.

Word has it that the company’s about to be turned upside down.

‘The legendary Jackson, once the pride of the Thornton family, has lost the use of his legs and is about to be stripped of his position by Sibley, with Cassian set to take over,‘ the receptionist recalled inside.

Almost everyone in the company, even the new hires, had heard this rumor.

That means the man in front of me is probably the soon–to–be–deposed former CEO, the receptionist wondered.

‘Even in a wheelchair, Jackson has an unmistakable air of nobility. No wonder he was once a force to be reckoned with in the business world,‘ the receptionist admired.

‘But for all his past brilliance, now Jackson is just a shadow of his former self, unable to walk, and rumor has it he’d even lost the ability to father children,‘ she sighed.

The receptionist kept her professional smile and said in a businesslike tone, “Sorry, I’m new here, so I don’t really know the ins and outs. But when I joined, the HR manager specifically told us that Mr. Cassian is our CEO.”

Ollie gave a cold laugh. “It’s only been a month, and Cassian’s already planning to hand the company over.”

Jackson’s expression stayed perfectly calm, completely unfazed.

The receptionist continued, “I really can’t let you in without permission. Why don’t you two wait in the lounge downstairs? Once Mr. Cassian finishes his morning meeting, I’ll let him know you’re here.”

Ollie sneered, “Wait? In this company, it’s always others waiting for Jackson. But Cassian sure is acting all high and mighty. Call him right now and tell him to come down and pick us up.”

“I’ll give it a shot,” the receptionist said, unable to argue further. She turned back to the front desk and dialed Cassian’s number.

This time, Cassian didn’t hang up. The call actually went through.

Jackson thought back to how Cassian had hung up on him almost instantly before. He smirked to himself, his eyes turning icy. “Truth be told, he thought, ‘Cassian’s still too impatient for his own good. Always chasing quick wins, never able to keep his cool.

“Mr. Cassian, there’s a gentleman in a wheelchair downstairs asking to see you. He wants you to come down right away… Is the meeting not finished yet? Will it take another half hour? Should I tell him to wait? Alright… Got it,” the receptionist said.

After hanging up, the receptionist apologized again to Jackson and Ollie. “Cassian said his meeting will take another half hour. He asked you to wait downstairs. There are sofas over there if you want to rest. Would you like to sit and wait for him?”

Jackson didn’t show any sign of irritation. He just smiled leisurely and said, “No need. If Cassian’s too busy now, that’s fine. He’ll come running to me soon enough. Ollie, let’s go.”

On the upper floors of the company tower, Cassian stood by the huge floor–to–ceiling windows, champagne in one hand and a glass in the other.

He watched Jackson leave below, then turned to Sibley with a triumphant grin. “Dad, seeing Jackson walk out like a beaten dog honestly makes my day.”

Kane laughed. “Right? Once you become the Thornton family heir and take full control, you’ll get to savor moments like this all the time. Everyone under you will be begging for your approval, waiting for your nod, hanging on your every decision. That feeling is just unbeatable.”

Cassian’s eyes burned with ambition as he refilled his father’s glass with champagne. “I wish that day would

come sooner.”

Kane gave his glass a little swirl. “It’s almost here. Once you’re the heir, we won’t have to bow to anyone ever again.”

After leaving the biggest auction house in Benwig, Victoria checked the time. It was just before ten.

Once she got in the car, she called Jackson.

Jackson picked up right away.

“Hey, Jax, what time do you want your treatment today?” Victoria asked.

Jackson let out a low chuckle, self–mockingly. “I could start treatment right now. I was planning to drop by the office to check things out, but after a month away, I got stopped at the door by my own employees. They wouldn’t even let me in.”

Victoria leaned back in her seat, raising an eyebrow with a teasing grin. “No way, you can’t even get into your own company? That’s gotta sting.”

“Tell me about it. Poor me, huh? Looks like I’ll have to rely on my future wife to cheer me up again,” Jackson

said.

“I bet you’re just making excuses on purpose,” Victoria teased.

“I swear, I’m innocent!” Jackson protested.

“Alright, so are we meeting at our usual spot, or should we go for that presidential suite like I mentioned last night?” Victoria teased.

But Jackson kept her guessing. “Not today. We’re going somewhere even more interesting.”

When Victoria finally followed the location Jackson sent and arrived, she couldn’t help but arch an eyebrow, her eyes lighting up with a spark of mischief.

There were two burly bodyguards in black suits lying unconscious outside the house, clearly taken down in one clean move.

‘So this is Jackson’s idea of “interesting“?‘ Victoria thought, a grin playing at the corners of her mouth.

‘Trust him to never let me down,‘ she thought.

The door was wide open, so Victoria didn’t hesitate. She stepped lightly over the two unconscious bodyguards and strolled in with calm confidence.

She spotted Jackson right away, sitting in his wheelchair by the window, a faint, mysterious smile on his lips and his eyes dark and full of secrets. Ollie stood beside him, always ready to help.

Then Victoria glanced at the sofa, where a young woman who looked barely twenty was sitting.

The girl was decked out in a pricey avocado green designer dress, the season’s hottest style. Her long black hair spilled over her shoulders, and she practically sparkled with youthful energy.

But right now, her beautiful face was twisted with anger, fear, humiliation, and a stubborn refusal to give in.

Hearing the commotion, Jackson turned to see Victoria walk in. “Hey, you made it.”

Victoria tilted her chin and pointed at the young woman on the sofa. “Who’s she?”

Jackson said, “That’s Sibley, the Thornton family’s adopted daughter.”

Sibley was checking Victoria out, her gaze full of curiosity.

‘So this is the real Binder heiress everyone’s been talking about, the one who shot to fame at the welcome party?‘ Sibley wondered.

Her features were sharp and pretty, but her skin wasn’t that classic porcelain white. Instead, it had a warm, sun–baked tone that made her look bold and a little wild.

After sizing her up, Sibley just couldn’t figure it out. Angelica had been pampered and trained in everything- music, art, manners, social skills–since she was little. Yet somehow, she still couldn’t outshine Victoria, who’d grown up in the sticks.

‘Looks like Angelica’s reputation is nothing but hype, Sibley thought.

Even though Sibley was full of doubts and disdain, she didn’t dare say anything reckless. Instead, she put on her best harmless, well–behaved act and asked Jackson, “Jackson, is this the Binder family’s recently returned daughter? Is she really going to be my future sister–in–law?”

Victoria gave Sibley an inscrutable look, her lips curled in a half–smile. “So you’re the Thornton family’s adopted daughter, huh? Jax ended up breaking his legs to save you, didn’t he?”

Sibley’s face froze, her smile instantly wiped away. She forced out a couple of awkward chuckles and lowered her voice, saying, “Yeah… I really did drag Jackson into this mess.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed, her tone sharp. “Oh? Was it just bad luck or did you do it on purpose?”
