Angelica felt a sudden pang in her chest. She was pretty sure whatever message Victoria had Simon bring her, it wasn’t going to be good.
“What did she say?” Angelica asked.
“She said Oliver is the only son of the elite Cooke family in Benwig City,” Simon replied, his voice laced with bitterness and helplessness.
Before Angelica could even react, Darell was already stunned. “You mean the elite Cooke family, the one with a strong research background?”
Simon nodded. “That’s pretty much what Victoria meant.”
Getting that confirmation from his eldest son, Darell’s face turned even more serious.
He’d gone out of his way, tapping into every connection he had, just to try and build a relationship with the Cooke family and work together. What he really valued was their powerful scientific research capabilities.
The Cooke family didn’t just have their own state–of–the–art herb cultivation base. They’d also managed to develop a bunch of new medicinal herbs.
But the weird thing was, even with all those advantages, they never actually got into the pharmaceutical business themselves. They only sold the raw herbs, never getting involved in the processing or production side of things.
For years, the pharmaceutical company Darell managed was like a stagnant pond–never a ripple of innovation.
He’d wracked his brain, throwing money at new drug research, but it was like a headless chicken running wild. He just couldn’t find an opening to work with the Cooke family.
‘So, according to Simon, I missed yet another shot at letting Angelica score a marriage alliance with the Cooke family and hitch our wagon to their star?‘ Darell thought bitterly.
Angelica nearly lost her footing, the words hitting her so hard she had to force herself to steady her nerves before she could stand upright again.
She thought, ‘So the Cooke family’s only son actually had feelings for me, and I just let that chance slip right through my fingers.
‘Oliver… I always thought that was just his pen name. I never realized he was actually the mysterious heir of the Cooke family. Of course. It all makes sense now.
She’d heard the Cooke family’s only son had always refused to take over the family business, insisting on chasing his own. passions instead.
“Turns out, his passion was writing web novels all along! Angelica thought.
She’d already lost Jackson, and now, to her shock, she’d missed out on Oliver too.
Darell fixed his gaze on Angelica, his eyes dark and intense. “Angelica, since it was just a misunderstanding, why not find a chance to apologize to Oliver?”
His tone sounded casual, but there was a heavy pressure behind his words.
Angelica quickly pulled herself together, forcing a cheerful smile. “Alright, Dad. Since I misunderstood Oliver, I’ll call him

Darell nodded. “You absolutely need to get his forgiveness. To be honest, I’ve been trying to cozy up to the Cooke family for years, and whether we get that chance or not is all riding on you, Angelica.
“If this partnership works out and I finally get full control of the pharmaceutical company, I’ll even throw you some shares.”
Angelica felt the pressure behind his words, the threat barely hidden. “I get it, Dad. I promise I won’t let you down.”
Simon noticed the strain in her smile, worry flickering in his eyes.
He thought, “But what’s the use of apologizing now?
‘After everything that happened yesterday, Oliver was clearly disappointed in Angelica. And with how tight he seemed with Victoria, why would he ever take Angelica’s side?‘
“Dad, Mom, Simon, I’m heading back now. I’ll try to find a chance to call Oliver and clear up what happened yesterday. I’ll come back tonight to look after Curtis,” Angelica said.
Darell nodded. “Go ahead. It’s been tough on you, having to take care of Curtis all this time.”
Angelica replied softly, “It’s really the least I can do. Curtis has always treated me so well. Sometimes I wish it was me lying here instead of him.”
As she finished speaking, Curtis’s eyelashes fluttered slightly on the hospital bed.
After Angelica left, Darell said to Simon seriously, “If you can’t pull off something this month to make your grandfather
ind, then before you hand Brightstar Entertainment over to Victoria, make sure you leave her some landmines.
ess so big she’ll have to scramble to clean it up. I want to see how someone with zero management experience an handle the Binder family’s business.”
eyes went icy. “Got it, Dad.”
rown up watching his father claw his way through the business world, and even after running Brightstar, he never
to make it shine.
Victoria was just another woman, like Angelica. Maybe she had some talent in the arts or medicine, but business was a whole different game. No way she’d be able to battle it out in the corporate jungle.
If Victoria took over and Brightstar still didn’t go anywhere, Calvin would definitely hand it right back to him.
The urgent priority was to find a way to neutralize the poison Victoria had given him.
Simon claimed he had urgent business at the company and left the hospital ahead of schedule. As soon as he got in his car, he dialed his personal assistant and bodyguard.
“Did
you find that expert thief I told you to look for?” Simon asked.
“Yes, Mr. Binder. He’s standing by for your orders,” the assistant replied.
“Alright, have him act tonight. The target is a white porcelain bottle with two thin, grayish cracks. Inside are some dark brown pills. Pass the details on to him,” Simon instructed.
“Got it,” the assistant replied.

‘Curtis’s accident was awful, but it gave me the opening I needed. I can’t afford to screw this up now, Simon thought.
A knock sounded outside Victoria’s hospital room.
Daisy looked up to see a young, handsome man, feeling a bit puzzled.
“Daisy, I’m here to see Victoria,” Oliver said politely.
Victoria explained, “Mom, this is Oliver. He’s the son of a man from the village who used to take care of me.”
Daisy instantly got it. ‘So this must be the Cooke family’s heir Victoria mentioned to Angelica through Simon.’ she thought.
The Cooke family was a powerhouse in Benwig City, and Victoria’s connections ran surprisingly deep.
“You two chat. I’ll go see if Zoe’s brought the food,” Daisy said, heading out.
Oliver set the fruit basket down and took a seat. Seeing she wasn’t seriously hurt, he joked, “If I hadn’t been following the news and spotted that the car in the accident belonged to Curtis, I wouldn’t have even known you’d been in a crash.
“Something this to give
you don’t tell your big brother? Are you trying to get my old man to rush over from the village just
just a little scrape, Oliver. No need to make a big fuss over it.”
onfused. “How did you end up crashing into Curtis?”
ctoria gave him a mocking look. “Curtis messed with my brakes, so I turned the tables and crashed right into him.”
Oliver was speechless.
He let out a helpless laugh. “Who does something that crazy just to turn the tables?”
Victoria laughed, “I’ve driven plenty of dangerous mountain roads before. My driving skills are solid. I can even figure out exactly how to flip the car and walk away with barely a scratch.”
Oliver thought to himself, ‘She actually calculated that? This girl’s a total maniac. Who even thinks like that?‘
Just then, his phone started ringing.
He glanced at the caller ID. Of all people, it was Angelica calling.
