Queen of Wild Cards novel Chapter 708

Still, Aiden swore to himself that one day, he would absolutely surpass Silas.

Alistair and Silas ignored his complaining and walked back into the house.

Fenton strolled over, waving his fan. He patted the boy's shoulder. "Don't worry, kid. If you get heatstroke, Alistair will fix you right up."

"But Fenton, if I get a tan, I won't look as handsome! When school starts, the other kids will ask if I spent the summer in the desert!"

"What are you worried about? Your mother just developed a brand-new whitening mask that works miracles. Just have her slap one on your face when you get home."

Having thoroughly enjoyed the show, Fenton sauntered away.

Gabriel and Dewey were just returning from the mountain when they saw Aiden sweating through his punishment stance. Gabriel offered no sympathy.

"I just set up a brand-new puzzle array in the woods, Aiden. Once your hour is up, go try to break it. If you can't figure it out, you don't get dinner."

"Gabriel, are you serious?! This is child abuse!"

He knew he should have gone to summer camp instead of coming to the mountains. He had been totally scammed by his sister.

Dewey walked over and gave his shoulder an encouraging squeeze. "Adversity builds character, kid. You've got this!"

The sun was blazing, so Dewey quickly retreated indoors as well.

In the end, it was his sweet little sister Aurora who trotted over and placed a straw hat on his head.

"Don't worry, Aiden! Gabriel's arrays are super easy. I'll help you break it later."

She then held up a carton of milk with a straw in it to his lips. "Here, drink some milk to keep your energy up!"

"Thanks, Aurora. You're the absolute best. When I grow up, I'm going to make so much money for you to spend."

His dad had drilled it into his head since day one: His sister was a princess, and he had to be the knight who protected her. When he grew up, he needed to be filthy rich so the princess could buy whatever she wanted, because a princess without money wouldn't have pretty dresses and would turn into an ugly duckling.

Aiden was old enough now to realize his dad had just been brainwashing him, but he still promised himself he would never let his sister worry about money.
