Chapter 155
Amelia’s POV
I paid for the drink and the newspaper, then stormed back outside to the bench where Jake was still sitting. As I came closer he looked over at me. Immediately, I showed him the newspaper. His jaw clenched and his features grew grim, but he didn’t say anything.
“We have to go back,” I said.
That drew his outrage. “Absolutely not,” he said at once.
“I can’t just leave him to die.”
Jake had a hard enough time trying to convince me to leave when I thought Damien was just going to be in prison for a while. But for him to now be in line for the executioner’s block? I couldn’t allow that. How could I possible go back to the human realm and pretend like everything was fine?
I would never forgive myself.
“If you go back, the King will put you on the block right next to Damien’s and you will both be killed,” Jake said. ” This is an unfortunate outcome, but it was always a possible one. Damien knew that when he did what he did.”
The words seemed so callous, especially about a man who was going to die.
“You never did like him,” I said.
“This has nothing to do with that,” he said, “And everything to do with keeping you out of it. He wants to protect you. He made certain that I would take you away from the danger.”
“But who is going to protect him?”
“Not you,” Jake said.
Who else? “He’s my mate.’
“He betrayed you,” Jake reminded me.
I didn’t need reminding of that. I still felt the sting, the pain of his betrayal. Even know I could feel the buzz of pain, particularly as whatever painkillers they had given me at the clinic were starting to wear off.
“That doesn’t mean I’m going to let him die for me,” I said.
In fact, that he was choosing now to be selfless, on the cusp of that betrayal, only succeeded in annoying me further. Who was he to try to act like he cared about me now, after everything that he’d done to hurt me?
After switching the injections, and the cheating…
To sacrifice himself for me…
How could I reconcile in my mind that the same man had done both of these things?
I couldn’t, and I wouldn’t let him off the hook so easily.
Jake stood up then and faced me. His eyes were sympathetic but his face was stern. “I won’t let you go back.” He made it sound like a threat.
“I have to go back.”

“No,” he said. “You don’t.”
“Yes, I do,” I replied, equally as sternly.
For a moment, we had a face off, staring at each other. It felt like a game of chicken. Which one of us would back down first?
Jake took it even further. Stepping toward me, he wrapped a strong arm around me like he was physically going to force me to do what he wanted.
I struggled against him, squirming while pushing at his shoulders. I wasn’t a wolf, let alone an Alpha wolf like him, but I wasn’t going to just roll over and let him boss me around, especially not with Damien’s life on the line!
“I am getting you out of here and to safety whether you want to go or not!” he insisted.
“I will fight you ever step, Jake! I will not let Damien die like this, not when I can do something!”
“You can’t do anything but die beside him!”
“You don’t know that! I have to at least try!”
