Instead of recoiling from the unsettling revelation, Sienna cautiously stepped closer, her nostrils flaring as she inhaled deeply, her instincts sharpening her senses.
“What’s wrong with it? That’s—” She paused, her eyes widening as she took another whiff. “That’s a human, Jake! What on earth are you thinking, bringing a human into our home?”
A sinking feeling washed over me. I had suspected she might be one of those werewolves, and now my hopes for a peaceful resolution seemed naïve.
Jake sighed heavily, a weariness in his posture that suggested this was a debate they had navigated many times before.
“She’s a person, Sienna. A person who is incredibly alone, terrified, and—” He hesitated, glancing back at me, weighing the implications of his words. Yet, he was an honest man, and he didn’t shy away from revealing the truth to his sister.
“And I feel a connection to her,” he concluded, his voice firm yet uncertain. “I think she might be my mate.”
Sienna’s eyes widened in shock before narrowing with suspicion. “Mate? But she’s pregnant; she’s already bonded to someone else!”
She pivoted away from Jake, her gaze scrutinizing me with a mix of curiosity and wariness. “Probably a witch,” she muttered under her breath, her tone laced with skepticism. “Why else would she need two mates? This feels like some sort of trick, Jake. Or a trap. She needs to leave, and she needs to leave now.”
Jake stepped protectively between us, his hands firmly planted on his hips. “Absolutely not. She’s staying.”
Sienna scoffed, crossing her arms defiantly. “Even if she is your destined mate, you know Mother and Father will never approve of you being with a human. Especially not one who’s carrying another man’s child!”
“Then keep it to yourself,” Jake replied, his voice steady. “Let’s not involve them until we sort this out.”
Sienna regarded him thoughtfully, tilting her head as if weighing her options. “And why should I?”
Jake chuckled softly, a hint of mischief in his eyes. “What if I upgrade your ride? You’ve been wanting a new car, haven’t you?”
She drummed her fingers against her arms, contemplating the offer. “Alright, fine,” she relented after a moment. “I’ll keep quiet—for now. But you need to handle this situation. If you don’t, I swear I will tell our parents, no matter what bribe you try to dangle in front of me.”
With one last frosty glare in my direction, she turned on her heel and strode out of the room, her footsteps echoing down the hall. Jake shook his head, watching her leave, then sank onto the sofa beside me.
“I’m really sorry you had to hear all that,” he said, wrapping his arm around my shoulders, his touch both comforting and warm. The air was still thick with tension, and despite the mildness of the season, I felt a shiver run through me, a mix of anxiety and uncertainty.
“No, really, I’m sorry. My presence here is bound to stir up all sorts of trouble.”
