Chapter 182
Amelia’s POV
I traveled with Jake, Martin, and Lillian by plane to the distant pack belonging to Alpha Claude, Shenne met us at the airport.
She looked good, better than she had at the capital. There, she had worn dresses with sharp angles and makeup. Her eyes had been distrustful and her lips turned ever down. Here, she wore worn jeans and casual shirts with her hair down, makeup light.
She still looked at me with distrust, but it wasn’t as harsh in the bright daylight. And her relief at seeing her family was palpable, allowing me to breathe easy and I hadn’t even realized I’d been holding my breath
Lillian seemed particularly happy, holding her daughter close
Martin smiled.
Jake was more stand-offish, staying back, nearer my side. After saying hello to both her parents, Sienna looked a
“Brother,” she said. “Amelia. I hope you both can forgive me.”
“Your lies to the King didn’t make things easy on us,” Jake said firmly.
“I got carried away,” she said. “But Uncle Benedict helped sort things out with me. I understand now. Amelia…. she’s…. family, I guess. But she’s not a witch.”
I studied her closely. Her words made Martin and Lillian nod with pride, but Jake and I were harder sells. Her face seemed honest, but she could have been a good liar. I had seen her lie before. I wasn’t ready to believe her yet, wasn’t sure that her mind could be turned around so completely, so quickly.
Even so, it was nice to see this broken family start to mend. And I hoped that even if she didn’t mean the words yet, she would soon, for the sake of her parents who clearly loved her so much, or her brother, who had always done his best for her, to not allow her to lead herself astray.
“Come,” Martin said, breaking the lingering moment. “I’m sure there must be much you wish us to see Sienna. I would very much like to see where you’ve been going to university. And we would love to meet your friends.”
“We also have to get checked in at the hotel,” Jake said. He picked a hotel in the same building as the Alpha Ball, so that I would be the nearest to him as possible during the event, just in case the worst should happen.
Cara, ever diligent, walked along behind us, along with several other bodyguards. They weren’t all here for me, but after what happened at the capital, I was fairly certain that the majority were. Each, like Cara, had sworn an oath to protect me. I hadn’t seen them take it, but I suspected it was even more intense than the one Cara had made in the past.
I also suspected it meant putting my safety above everything else, even the orders of the Alpha King
I had no proof of that, just an inclination, given what happened in the past.
As we reached the terminal, a sharp wind drew my attention to the west. There, I saw another plane open. And descending down the stairs, I saw Damien.
He looked at me too, and for a moment, we stared at each other, with the wind and distance separating us.
My heart skipped a beat. This was an Alpha Ball. Of course he would be here. Why had I expected not to see him?

And now that he was here, before me, I was faced with a paradox of feelings.
I wanted to believe in him but it was difficult. That poison had nearly killed me. Damien had nearly killed me.
How could it be that I still loved him? Even now? Even after everything?
Maybe I was some kind of masochist. Maybe I just liked to hurt.
Or maybe I wanted so desperately to be the man I once that he was that it hurt me inside.
I had to be delusional.
I could only imagine what he was thinking, looking back at me. Was he disappointed the poison didn’t work? Was he thinking of ways to kill me, even now?
“My lady,” Cara said. “We should continue.”
Cara knew better than almost anyone what I had gone through, so when she said the words, it did wake me from the daydream I had been caught in. Her tone reminded me that the dream was actually a nightmare.
Leaving Damien behind, I hurried to catch up to Jake and the others, my bodyguards following behind me diligently.
Damien’s POV
I watched Amelia until she disappeared into the terminal. Yet, even with her out of sight, I could still sense her presence. So close. My mate.
It was good to see her healthy. She looked happy. Her stomach was good and round. She would have our baby soon. Gods, I hoped I could clear things up with her before that happened.
I wanted to be a part of our baby’s life from the very start, and I wanted to be there for her too.
Why hadn’t she replied to my letter?
Maybe she hadn’t even opened it. If that was the case, I had to get close to her, close enough to speak and plead my case in person.
I couldn’t let her think I was the one who tried to hurt her, not for even a moment longer.
“What’s wrong with you?” Victoria said, as she got off the plane next. She hadn’t seen Amelia, it seemed, and didn’t know I’d been staring. That felt like a small victory, but one I was willing to take.
Victoria was my sister, and I loved her, but she was a friend of Claire’s. The less she knew about my lingering affections for Amelia, and Amelia’s distaste of me, the happier I was. I didn’t need anyone to have any more ammunition to use against me about why I should change my mind and allow Claire to stay.
That Amelia now hated me was probably the most powerful tools against me.
I only hoped it wouldn’t last for long.
“Come on,” Victoria said, giving me a playful shove. “We’re going to be late for the mixer.”
At the start of the ceremonies and events was a mixer, or a meet-and-greet for various attendees to rub elbows and talk.
I never particularly cared for this part, but it was Victoria’s favorite. As such, hopeful I might see Amelia there, I

escorted Victoria into town and to the mixer.
Unfortunately, Amelia was nowhere to be seen. Instead it was full of only werewolves, including the pack Alpha, Claude.
Claude was already deep into the wine, and offered me a glass as I came near.
