Chapter 184
Amelia’s POV
When Jake and his family returned that evening, Cara must have told him that Sienna had stopped by to talk to me, because Jake immediately came to talk to me.
“What did she say?” he asked, sitting on the side of my bed. I hadn’t been asleep, hadn’t been able to. He must have seen my light.
I couldn’t tell him the truth, not without putting him in danger. Once I was in safety, and the danger had passed, I would tell him what was happening. But not before. Not now, when his life could be threatened as much as my
own. 1
“She wants to make up,” I said, which wasn’t a total lie. This rescue felt a bit like extending an olive branch in a way. If she succeeded in saving my life and together we saved Jake, then I could see us building a friendship from it. I never would have thought such a thing possible before.
“That’s it? Cara said she seemed nervous,” Jake said, narrowing his eyes.
“She was nervous because she wouldn’t know if I would believe her.” Not a lie, either, but it still felt like one.
The guilt of lying to this man weighed heavy on me. But to protect him, someone who had become so close to me that he was almost like my brother, I had to play these games. I had to walk around these lies.
At least until the danger had passed.
Then I’d be relieved to tell him the truth.
For now, he accepted my words at face value, making me hate myself even more. He nodded and stood. After he left the room, I fell back on the bed and hoped I was making the right choice.
Who were those men that wanted us dead? Were they Damien’s enforcers? I hadn’t recognized their voices, but that didn’t mean anything.
The baby was so close to being delivered. Was that why he was pushing so hard for my death?
Gods…
Tears welled in my eyes. I would have done anything to keep him from hating me this much.
I had once thought he loved me. How could I have been so wrong?
I didn’t sleep at all, and felt genuinely sick the next morning as Jake and his parents planned to go down for breakfast. I was invited to this, but I declined, blaming morning sickness.
Lillian offered to stay with me, but I turned her down, telling her, I just needed to sleep.
In the end, they left, leaving me alone in the apartment. I already knew Cara was at the door, however, and I had some suspicions that the second bodyguard was in the side room, as before.
That made sneaking out somewhat more difficult. I couldn’t just walk out.
I moved out to the balcony off my bedroom. Gripping the railing, I looked down.
Far beneath me, on the street, I saw Sienna standing nervously outside of a car. She was checking her watch. Was that the car for me?

Then she pulled out her phone and typed a message.
My phone chimed. Grabbing it, I checked the message.
Now or never.
Realizing I didn’t have much choice, I looked around.
I had given this some thought the night before. Before I got pregnant, I had been in relatively good shape. I hope that held to this day, because I would need my strength for what I was about to do.
After checking around, making sure no one was nearby and no one was watching, I pulled my way over the railing of my balcony and started to slowly descend the trellis that lined the entire side of the hotel.
I moved slowly, carefully, incredibly aware that my body was bulky and awkward. That made this so much more difficult than it needed to be. But if I went slowly, then.
Just as I was nearing the floor beneath mine, I froze as the doors to the balcony beneath mine opened.
Damien walked out in only a towel. His phone was to his hear, and he was speaking with some stern annoyance into it. “I don’t care how it gets done, it just needs done. Got it? No matter what. We can’t have any mistakes on this.”
What was he talking about? Could he be talking about the attack against me?
My blood ran cold.
I didn’t move an inch, afraid he would look over and see me.
My luck held out though, because a moment later, he turned away and disappeared back into the room.
I shook the image of him shirtless from my mind, with that towel low on his hips. This was not the time for lust. I was hanging off the side of a building and Damien was plotting my death.
Annoyed at myself for the momentary distraction, I continued my descent with renewed haste.
Blessedly, after a few more minutes, I reached the ground without any more incidents or dangers.
Sienna wasn’t there anymore but the car still was. Rushing too it, I threw open the back door and got into it.
As soon as the doors closed, the locks came down.
The driver spoke into his phone. “The package is secured.”
I almost laughed at the secret code, but instead, my blood ran even colder, forming icicles in my veins.
This voice I did recognize.
He was from Damien’s pack. He was… Victoria’s driver? Yes. Gods! That meant he had to be in on this!
Did Sienna set me up? Did she use the danger to her brother to trick me?
I tried to open the door, but the lock wouldn’t budge.
As the car drove away, I could only look out the window longingly, as the hotel grew smaller and smaller in the distance.

I watched, grinning from ear to ear as Amelia entered that car.
Gods, she really did have the blinders on when it came to my family. She’d probably believe anything, do anything, if she thought Jake was going to be hurt.
Well, that gullibility would be her undoing once and for all.
And she’d get what she deserved, the evil witch.
