**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah 252**
**Chapter 252**
“You don’t need to talk to do it,” Damien murmured, his tone now hushed, almost conspiratorial.
“See what I mean?” Claire shot back at me, a smirk playing on her lips. “Alphas.”
If Claire was trying to forge some sort of bond with me, she was failing spectacularly. The tension in the air was palpable, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that she was a venomous snake lurking in the grass. Jake’s evident disdain for her only added to my discomfort. On top of that, I harbored a nagging suspicion that she was entangled in a secret affair with my adopted sister’s mate, all while my sister remained blissfully unaware. The thought of it twisted my insides.
There was no way I was going to warm up to someone who would so callously shatter my sister’s heart.
Yet, this dilemma forced me to grapple with my anger towards Damien as well.
Claire, undeterred by my silence, flashed a smile that felt more like a sneer. “So, Annette, where did you come from? The human world, just like Amelia? Is that where you’ve been hiding all this time?”
The mention of the human world sent a chill down my spine, a stark reminder of the life I had left behind.
“No, I—” I began, but before I could finish, Jake interjected.
“You don’t need to know about her,” he stated firmly, his voice steady, just as Damien added, “That’s enough, Claire.”
Claire leaned in closer, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, her eyes gleaming with mischief. “Did you know how much of a spoiled whore your sister was?”
I recoiled, my heart racing with indignation. “Excuse me?” My voice was sharp, laced with disbelief.
“I’ll take that as a no,” Claire chuckled lightly, her laughter grating against my nerves. “But if you’re interested in the full truth, I’d be more than happy to enlighten you.”
Fury surged through me, hot and unyielding. “I don’t care who you think you are; you can’t talk about my family that way,” I snapped, my voice rising. “Now, we’re going to sit here in silence until the blood draw is finished. One more word from you, and I swear I’ll duct tape your mouth shut. Understood?”
Claire’s eyes widened in shock, a flicker of fear crossing her face. “I guess you aren’t her…” she murmured, quickly averting her gaze.
For the remainder of the blood draw, an oppressive silence enveloped us. I focused intently on the bag, watching it fill slowly, each drop a reminder of my sister’s plight. I refused to look at Claire again after her vile comments about my deceased sister.
No wonder Jake loathed her.
I found myself sharing that sentiment, a growing resentment simmering beneath the surface.
