**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah**
**Chapter 27**
“Sienna?” I called out softly, careful not to startle her as I approached. She was so deeply immersed in her reading that my voice seemed to float away, unheard amidst the silence of the room.
With a gentle touch, I placed my hand on her shoulder, hoping to break her concentration without alarming her. To my surprise, she jumped, spinning around in her chair with wide eyes that narrowed as they landed on me.
“Amelia! What are you doing sneaking up on me like that?” she exclaimed, her voice a mixture of surprise and irritation.
I instinctively took a step back, raising my hands in a gesture of peace. “I’m really sorry! I didn’t mean to scare you. I just wanted to say hi,” I replied, my voice soft and sincere.
“Yeah, right, sure. Well, hi. Now leave me alone,” she shot back, her tone dismissive.
A part of me considered taking her advice and retreating, but another part—a more stubborn part—was determined to bridge the gap that existed between us. She was the only one in this family with whom I hadn’t felt an immediate connection, and I couldn’t help but wonder if that was somehow my fault for not making more of an effort.
“Listen, Sienna,” I began, gathering my thoughts, “I know we got off on the wrong foot. I really want to apologize. I can see how it might feel like I just barged into your home and your family without any consideration for your feelings. That’s not fair to you, and I truly regret it.”
She turned her back to me, her focus shifting back to the book in her hands. But after a moment, she slowly lifted her gaze, staring out the window as if searching for answers in the distance. “You’re sorry,” she stated flatly, her voice devoid of warmth.
As she finally closed her book and turned to face me, I was taken aback by the intensity of the hatred reflected in her eyes. She stood up and began to pace, a fierce snarl forming on her lips that sent a chill down my spine. It was a terrifying sight.
“You can save your fake apologies, witch. You don’t have to pretend to be nice to me. I know what you really are,” she spat, her voice laced with venom.
A half-laugh escaped my lips, mingled with disbelief. She had labeled me a witch the very first day I arrived, but it hadn’t crossed my mind that she might still cling to that notion. “Witch? Come on, Sienna. Do I really look like some powerful magical being to you?” I asked, trying to inject a bit of humor into the tense situation.
