Chapter 346
Damien’s POV
“What do you mean?” Jake asked her. He was slower at realizing what was happening than I was. Or maybe he was in denial about it. I’d probably be the same if Amelia had forgotten me. “I’m Jake. Your brother.”
Amelia laughed a little, nervously. Her gaze shifted between me and Jake, like she was hoping I had some answers for her. To him, she said, “I’m sorry, but I don’t have a brother. Especially not one here in the werewolf realm. I’m human.”
“Human?” Jake repeated vaguely, like he couldn’t comprehend the words.
I was struggling with it too, still in shock that Amelia recognized me as her mate. What happened to her existence as Annette? Was she just… gone?
Amelia suddenly went very pale. She placed her hands to her stomach. “Damien. What about our baby? What happened to our baby? Are they okay?”
I gawked at her, having no idea what she was talking about.
As I did, though, Jake turned to me, his eyes filled with rage and malice. “Your… what? You were only supposed to protect her! You weren’t supposed to… to… do that!” He was clearly flustered, but among that bustle was fury at
“Nothing happened between us these past few weeks, I swear,” I said. “I hadn’t been with Amelia since before everything happened!”
“I could kill you,” Jake growled. “I could rip your throat out.”
I squared up, seeing the threat he was making was very serious.
“I don’t know what you are saying, but I am pregnant, Damien. I’m sorry I haven’t told you. I wanted to be sure before I did, since the viability of a werewolf human baby is so low. Dr. Wyatt was working with me though… She could tell you.”
“Dr. Wyatt is in on this?” Jake said, his voice growing tight.
“Wait,” I said, holding my hand out to Jake. “Just wait a minute. Amelia hasn’t seen Dr. Wyatt since she left your pack.”
The pieces were finally starting to come together in my mind. It was making sense now, how Amelia didn’t know who Jake was. Why she would think she was pregnant.
It was like all of her memories had entirely reversed to how they had been six years ago. Before she found out Claire was pregnant. Before she ran. Before Jake, and Sienna, and the Alpha Ball. Before everything.
This Amelia, right here, remembered only our time together when we were still happy, still trying for a child.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you,” Amelia said to me, her eyes watery, both sad and afraid she had disappointed me somehow. That would have been impossible, I knew. “I wanted to have a nice evening at home and surprise you. Now I don’t even know if our baby is still alive.”
“She is,” I said at once, going to my wife, my mate. She needed me. Even if she couldn’t remember the past six years, even if her fears were echoes of a past and not our present reality, she was still frightened. These fears were still real and fresh to her.

She had no idea how great our kids turned out to be.
Taking her hands in mine, I kissed each one of her knuckles, hoping to soothe her. Her fear shook me down to my core. I never wanted her to be this afraid. It felt as if I was failing her as her mate to allow such terror to grip her.
“Our daughters are perfectly healthy and perfectly safe,” I told her.
Her brow drew together. It was her turn to be confused.
“Tell me the last thing you remember,” I said. I tried to be gentle as I explained, “I think there is something off with your memory, my love.”
“My…?” She thought for a moment. “I remember going to see Dr. Wyatt, and learning about my pregnancy. Then I was going home to tell you, and I…” She rubbed at her forehead. “Everything is blank after that.”
“Darling,” I said softly. “That was six years ago.”
She blinked. “No, I… How can that be?”
“We have two beautiful daughters now, Amy and Stacy,” I said. For the sake of clarity, it didn’t seem to make sense to get into the complications of the situation at the moment. For now, I just needed Amelia to understand what was happening.
“Two?” she asked, her eyes going wide. Then they started to fill with fresh tears. “How could I forget our own daughters?” She blinked, and those tears tracked down her face. She was the picture of misery. “I’m a terrible mother.”
“No,” I said at once. I dropped her hands to cup her face instead and brushed away her tears with my thumbs. ” You’ve had a head injury. It’s not your fault for forgetting. But our daughters love you. You don’t need to worry about that. You are a good mother.”
She blinked a few times, the stream of her tears never-ending. “I want to remember. I don’t want to forget them.”
“You will remember in time,” I told her, hoping it was true. “You just need to be patient with yourself, okay? It could take time to remember, but I’m sure you will.”
Just as she remembered herself as Amelia after six years as Annette, I was certain that she would remember her time as Annette too. But it would take time. Maybe six years, maybe longer or shorter. But one thing I knew, from talking with Jeffrey, was that the mind could not be rushed.
“I want to talk to your wolf,” Jake said suddenly, reclaiming both Amelia and my attention. We both looked over at him. “Now, Amelia.”
Amelia shook her head a little. “I don’t have a wolf. I’m human.” Once more, she glanced at me for answers.
“Well…” Before I could explain properly, Jake spoke up again.
“Let me talk to Serena,” he said, his voice gruff. He sounded angry, but I wondered if that was only to cover the hurt. To be forgotten was no kindness.
He was so caught up in his own feelings though, that he seemed blind to Amelia’s. Jake took a step towards her somewhat threateningly, and Amelia tensed, the fear returning to her eyes.
“I don’t know what you are talking about,” she said. “I don’t know what I’ve forgotten or not forgotten. I’m certain I’m human… but even if I’m not, I don’t feel any wolf. There’s no one here for you to talk to but me.”
