Amelia’s POV

“Everything is fine now,” Damien said. “It just… you must have hit your head, but it was an accident.”
I didn’t know what to believe, especially as he dipped his gaze away, not quite meeting my eyes.
Yet, I supposed his explanation was sound, and as he was my soul mate, my husband, and the father of my children, I saw no reason he would lie to me. I trusted him so implicitly that I simply accepted whatever he had to say to me.
I always would.
“Okay,” I said.
He seemed slightly surprised, his eyes widening for just a moment before returning to normal. Had he expected me to fight him on this? Or to not trust him?
Why would I have done that?
He was my mate. Mates didn’t lie to each other.
Damien’s POV
Later that night, as Amelia started to doze, I stepped out into the hallway to give her some quiet. I wasn’t ready to fall asleep yet, my mind still racing a hundred miles a minute.
I’d earlier received a text from Eve, asking me to find her in her borrowed office after Amelia fell asleep. She said she wanted to talk to me.
When a Healer wanted to talk to you, it usually meant something bad. I put it off as long as I could, but couldn’t deflect her anymore. So I asked a nurse for directions and then went to the office that Eve was borrowing while she was here in my pack.

I didn’t know if I should have been impressed by her dedication to Amelia’s health, or alarmed.
Seeing me darkening the doorway, she set the results aside and gestured for me to sit in one of the chairs opposite her desk.
Moving there, I sat down.
“You lied to Amelia about how she came to have her condition,” Eve said. “Out of respect to you, your authority as Alpha, and your position as her mate, I did not correct you.”
“I appreciate that -”
“However,” she said, cutting me off.
Healers were some of the few people I allowed to do so. As Alpha, I was used to leading the conversations, but

Eve was an experienced healer. She knew much more than I did about werewolf physiology and phycology. I’d learned long ago that if an accomplished Healer cut you off, you should listen.
So I listened.
“I only wish to give a word of caution,” Eve said. “Lying too much to Amelia is exactly what Jake did, and because of that, he left her vulnerable to the danger that Sienna imposed.”
“Jake was a fool to trust Sienna,” I said, no longer able to stay quiet, now that I realized this wasn’t a medical discussion but a moral one. “He failed to protect Amelia properly.”
“Yet you have not warned her about Claire,” Eve replied. “Not even to tell her about Stacy’s true lineage.”
